Usually a hole in the block means new engine

Overrev? maybe rev limiter isn't working?

But damn, I didn't know that was possible. All you have are headers, a catback, and a CAI.

WOW that did not answer one question!
Where u driving when u heard the bang or was it parked?
How fast where u going if u were moving?
Do the mecanics know why it happened?
Do u have and mods, CAI , headers , turbo, NOS??

that will bend valves for sure, but have not heard of rod thru block as a result of tbelt? anyone else seen that? kris?

A broken lower rod bearing cap would do it or a piston wrist pin could break and kaboom

The engine should take full throttle with the listed mods--
supercharger is the only way I have seen to really pop the motor good since the 80s
Oil pressure?

Another good reason to seafoam the oil-- remove years of sludge from the oil gallies and vtec operating system--which uses oil pressure to operate
TV connercials are not kidding about engine sludge

To paraphrase Cale Yarburough, "She was running great and all of a sudden she blew up." Of the 3 thrown rods I've seen, my lawn tractor and a friend's Volvo were the result of low oil issues. A 1970's Oldsmobuick was being driven a bit aggressive (100 mph) and the engine just gave up.

He "got on it" so evidently he was moving. That's one question. And if he "got on it" engine speed would be more important than actual speed, and he was probably revving pretty high. Mods are listed in the sig. That's 3 right there.

But I'm also curious as to why it happened.

You would really have to be overreving the engine to toss a rod with the engine being stock...what did your rev limiter malfunction and you shift it at the top of the tach? (what is it like 9k?)

Ive seen turbo, nitrous and s/c engines do it, but not a stock engine

Like others stated-Im sure it was the timing belt letting go. It can be pretty catastrophic at high RPM when it happens...

Yes i have seen it. I have done it.

Judging from the stoutness of our rods/crank/caps, smething had to just be a rare freak break. Also how would you drive for 2 blocks with a thrown rod.?? My guess is a timing belt broke.

The Oldsmobuick I mentioned ran suprisingly good on 6 (of 8) cylinders. At first I thought it was merely a broken valve rocker (push rod engine) or bent push rod, but when I removed the intake, the small end of one of the con rod was sitting where the 7-8 camshaft lobes used to be. The engine started, and other than the knocking caused by the remaining 1/2 of the con rod banging the block, ran fairly smooth.

well it wasnt the timing belt that broke so thats out of the question. they told me that it was an internal failure and the the oil level was fine. and after she went i looked under the car to see oil just pouring out and the tech told me there is a hole in the back of your block. the car started up in the shop but only ran on two cylinders.
