K&N Filter

I am somewhat distraught at finding the childish bickering in response to my question, though I am pleased by any response. Any response is after all a matter of opinion, some simply more informed than others(some people are ALWAYS more informed). I have also watched "Crank and Chrome on TV and watched as a K& N Fuel injection Performance Kit(Basically a filter) added 12 rear wheel HP to a Z28 sitting on a Dyno and tested before and after the install; pretty hard for any intelligent person to argue with!! I have since purchased and installed a K&N for my 3.2CL Type-S after looking at a Comptech foam filter and rejecting same due to the sales person being unable to advise which side goes down, the red or yellow. It will fit either way!
I have used K&N filters in many previous autos, all with no difficulty of ANY kind. I have also found that while I can't claim to feel any small HP differences, ALL the engines became "More Alive", that is; more willing to wind up, more responsive to throttle inputs and all did show better gas mileage(currently 21 mixed and 27 highway on an engine with only 1k miles). I do believe all of the above attributes are good and desirable.
Once again, thank you for your opinions.

If childish bickering took place, why make a whole new thread on the sdame topic? Could have posted your thanks on the same one. Anyhow, good luck. The stock TL-S box is not as restrictive as those of the 4th gen z282, so you wont be seeing anything near 12HP though, though I'm sure you already know that

There is a very long post on www.bmwm5.com of an owner with hp problem which may be attributed to the oil from the K&N intefering with the MAF. Maybe, maybe not but I wouldn't risk it. New engines are so sensitive to problems with the air fuel mixture that I think one should avoid what engineers spent hours designing. Especially with a high output engine like yours or an //M engine.

I would also like to add, that many tests that show gains are on very restricted engines, not engines designed for very high output already. 3-8 hp at the crank is what, less than 1 at the wheels? So what is the point of these filters again? The little sticker?

Seriously, I did notice more throttle response on my previous '89 325i with a K&N but this car also responds well to chip mods and exhaust as the engine is a bit detuned, unlike a Type S engine or my //M5 engine. It did sound a bit better at full throttle which is also good for the very quiet engines produced today. This is not an issue on my M5 which screams at redline (six throttle bodies make sweet music). My car currently has 145k miles on it and my goal is to take to 200k plus on the original engine. At $15k to rebuild the engine I will stick with the stock filter.

My wife just got a 323i wagon and those seem to see real gains with a CAI, exhaust, etc. but I wouldn't dare during the warranty period. I am not going to give them any excuse for denial of warranty work. Plus, what makes her car fun to drive, despite the tip transmission, is the handling. It isn't that fast and won't be much faster with mods.

Here we go again

He won't have problems with oil, has his car doesn't have a maf. The sensor is inside the intake manifold, where its safe even if you could get oil on it. Look up his previous thread, someone should lock this one
