K&N air filter reduces gas mileage

Hello all,

I replaced the air filter with K&N brand about a month ago. I noticed a big gas mileage reduction. I used to get about 350 to the tank, mostly freeway, before I put in the K&N air filter. After I installed K&N, I am getting around 310, mostly freeway. At first, I thought the K&N air filter need to get use to the ECU, but I don't see any improvement after the 4th tank.

Has anyone noticed/experienced this issue?

BTW, I got a 1999 TL.

Also, I smell gas sometime and the fuel injection has been cleaned by the repair shop a few weeks ago. Any suggestion on this as well?

Are you sure you don't have a gas leak?

It's interesting you mention this, I just dropped in my K&N filter and was wondering if I would see any improvements.

If you smell gas, it is something other then the filter.

Yeah the air filter only lets your engine breathe better thus resulting in slighty better gas mileage...if you are smelling gas, get that checked out asap. A fuel component is leaking.

maybe since the K&N install you're driving more aggresive, therefore your mileage change?

I put a regular filter while cleaning/re-oiling my K&N for a few days. I haven't noticed much change in mileage, but did notice drop in performance a bit with paper filter. The exhaust sounded more muted with conventional filter.....maybe it's just me.

So I have a K&N filter in their and I've noticed the car is slightly more powerful. Just me or does the filter actually lead to improvements?

I bought it because it was reusable.

Its important to have any fuel smells after a service looked at IMMEDIATLY
Its losing fuel to the atmospere- potential fire hazard- air leak into fuel system not good in general- Its back to the shop for you!
today!!!!

Clean the TB butterfly plate when installing the K&N, there is planty of engine oil vapors getting pumped in there from smog equipment- that any arguement about K&N oiling up the plate are laughable

The filter itself straightens the airflow-see their website
reducing turbulent air to the manifold so the engines design can take and swirl the air as it likes.

Many find removal of the lower intake resonator box (see DIY) will enhance the K&N performance in power- and if you keep your foot out of it- mileage - on trips for sure!
A Seafoam treatment will maximize engine performance~

Thanks everyone for your input(s).

I found the air hose was slightly loosen. air leak?
after i tighten the hose and filled up the gas tank with one bottle of Seafoam, I noticed a big gas mileage increased. I got close to 370 miles to the tank.
