Question

Probably too small and underpowered to compete with TLS. More likely will compete with BMW 3 and Benz 3 and IS300.

It seems to be fairly good in size, but a tad bit underpowered for my taste...still a Jag for around 30k is appealing...

I had originally considered it, but dropped it a while back because of the problems I heard about Jags (apparently Ford didn't get rid of all the build quality problems).

Now I'm deciding between a TL Type-S (hopefully with the six-speed) and Subaru WRX Wagon. Leaning towards the Wagon lately because of the utility. But I'll miss the 'luxury' of my QX4 if I get the Subie.

The X-type although will base in the lower 30s when loaded to a level of the TL or (S) will come in around 42 to 44k based on early option price estimates.

As for the WRX. Go out to Hertz and rent one of their Subies for a day. Everytime I do, I find transmissions that slip and poor quality after 15k miles. Also keep in mind that the WRX is the bottom end model that has been hopped up. As to the utility of a small wagon, that a tough call. Depends on how much you need to haul.

After linking to MSN Carpoint...nah, a lot of the stuff that is standard on the TL-S is optional on the Jag. I priced it and I would have to pay about $43 K for the Jag comparably equipped. If I wanted to do that I may as well get a Beemer or a Lexus or a whatever. Not interested.

X-Type .. all you need to know is that it is 40% Ford Taurus/Ford Mondeo ..... that's all you need to know.

I think the x-type looks sweet. Especially with AWD on base the car is kick-ass. But once all options are added 40Gs is a lot of $$$.

Let's see a Jaguar based on a Ford Mondeo (which would have been the Ford Contour/mercury mystique)here and it will be built in the OLD Ford Escort plant in the U.K., I don't @#$%^& think so.....

Only Jags that count as Jags are the XK-8 and XJ series, this s-type and x-type Ford crap is for the birds...

AMEN... it's a Ford in a Jag's skin. The problem is that at the $30k price range, it's mostly a Ford. The higher end Jags are nice, but the S and X type are rebadged / redesigned Ford Mondeo's....

Why drive a $40K+ Ford? Drove a Lincoln LS a few months ago -- yuck! Granted, the retro XK-120 styling is appealing. Just don't try to drive too fast.

Checked one out tonight. Sat in it, moved seats around etc.

It seemed like an upscale Ford to me. I wasn't very impressed. I think the styling is bla too. What is it with the latest trends of producing something that looked like it melted in the sun? What happened to clean lines and edges?

I think some of this is a case of Ford trying to make sure the X type won't possibly look as good or better than their other Jag cars. I respect BMW, because they didn't make the 3 series look like shit in an effort to make the 5 series look better (they do dumb down the smaller engine models within a series though). Maybe that is why they are the class leader. Anyway, even Honda does this. The front end of the Accord looks WORSE than older models... presumably so they can make the TL look more distinguished. Had they built the TL from the ground up, they would have had a better TL, and a better Accord, and they'd probably both have improved sales (although they aren't really hurting in that respect... maybe its why they don't bother). I thought the Legend was, and still is, a better looking, more unique car for its time than the TL. To Honda's credit, they aren't charging $15,000 more than a loaded Accord, so I guess it is fair. Look at that Infiniti sport ute (QX4). That is nothing more than a glorified pathfinder.

Anyway, I won't be buying a $40,000 Ford Mondeo this fall. I hope they fail miserably. That's what you deserve when you don't try to build the best car in the class. At least Mercedes gave it an honest effort. They'll sell like hotcakes for the first 6 months, then it will suffer the fate of the Lexus IS300 (probably worse actually).

Don't get a WRX! If the STI comes out, you'll be kicking yourself daily.

275 hp, 275 lb/ft, 4.8 0-60, 13.5 et.

Either get a great deal on a BMW 330i, or get the TL-S. What else is there? The IS300 has flopped, and I doubt the 5-spd for 2002 will help much (those tailights are UGLY). Audi still isn't dependable, especially the Qautro (but when it works, the S4 is awesome, with a manual). Mercedes C320 is nice, but not sporty enough. Anyone heard what the 2002 Maxima will be like?

From Maxima.org it will have 260 hp 3.5 v6, 6 speed stick, hid, revised front & rear & nav. The 6 speed will eat tls all day.
