Jacking/Lifting the Car

I have a portable hydraulic pump lift. However, during hot days, the asphalt driveway will get hot and the weight of the car plus lift will make a depression in the asphalt!! I usually lift it on the frame on the passenger side. This gives me just enough room to get to the oil pan/oil filter. What do the rest of you do to lift the vehicle? Any tips?

use jack stands, they will help to distribute the weight so it's not all on the lift.

you can also get a racing style jack or use the one that comes with the car for oil changes. In any case, I'd never get under the car with just one item supporting it - my head's not worth saving $10 and 2 minutes of time.

you may also just want to do the oil change in the shade.

btw, if it's so hot to melt the asphalt, why aren't you inside. I lived in AZ for about 16 years and it only gets hot enough to melt the asphalt a few times during the summer, PA is using some cheap material for their roads, but then again I was never impressed by PenDOT when I lived in Pittsburgh.

Same thing applies when you park a bike on an asphalt driveway....what I used to do was through a small 1'x1' piece of plywood under the stand.

Good advice to put a piece of wood underneath the jack.

medic-- The TL's heavy, what can I say?! Anyways, PennDOT does suck the big 'un!

Yaron-- Ever been up to the Germantown area of Philly? Talk about needing an alignment every week!

At the risk of flamage:

1. You have a ~$30K+ Car.
2. Get a new driveway, with proper concrete.

Is this viable?

How do you go about in lifting the front end of your car? Do you lift one side and use a jack stand , then lift the other side and use the jack stand to lift the front end of ur car up?

Sure it's viable... you're right that I should have some solid concrete, but I love the look of blacktop. Plus blacktop is easier to maintain and looking decent by resurfacing.

Use the front tow hook as your jack point.

If i'm only doing an oil change I use ramps. They give the safest and highest lift.

that's what I do...works fine. may take longer then just lifting one side of the car up, but I try to reduce the number of ways the car could (god forbid) slide.

If both sides are up to the same level, the car will only slide front and back. if you have only one side up then the car could go front or back or even to the side.
