WOW Thats the same mileage mine went at on my 01TL

Be thankful for warranty and dealer loaner cars!

You will notice a major improvement in the cars performance with the new transmission.

Sorry to hear that man. Hope the transplant and everything goes well at the hospital. Were you going at a high speed when it kicked the bucket on you?

Nah it was showing signs of taking a complete dump so I was taking it easy. I was over my friends house 2 blocks away and had to like punch it to get home.

What were your particular symptons that indicated it was on its way out (ie: anything out of the ordinary)? Has anyone had the transmission go out at highway speeds?

Some has had the tranny go out at highway speeds luckily that didnt happen to me. My first indication of the outgoing tranny was its inability to engage in reverse. After the reverse issue came noticeable it went to the infamous 2nd to 3rd gear hesitation. Then it went into the 2nd to 3rd gear rpm jump and today after hanging with the boys it had issues going from 1st to 2nd gear and then all the lights showed up. During the past week it showed signs of going out and sometimes shifted smoothly, I had an appointment Thursday but cancelled it because Tuesday - Thursday it ran fine so I figured I can get through the weekend since I had something I have to do tomorrow and I really dont wanna get stuck with a TSX. Well the tranny didnt agree with my procastination and screwed me today and I'll still probably end up with the TSX unless I get it towed to a dealer further out from my house that I really dont want to do. I knew it was bound to happen but its all good, I still love my perty Noble Green TL-S..

Sorry to hear about your transmission - now you'll have a new one soon. Thanks for detailing your warning signs. And, I agree NGP sure is pretty!

Why do so many think its a bad thing when the trans dies under warranty?

Its not sorrow- its means fresh built new transmission will be here tomorrow!!!!

As soon as I felt symptoms, I put on the extreme wear needed to make symptoms happen at the dealer and said "thank you for the free transmission and oh -what? Bad motor mount $150 OK Thanks for finding it, thanks for the loaner car seeeee ya"

70k and new transmission, I am driving on 1/2 a new car
Seafoam and NGK Iridiums are worth another 1/4
So a few mods, new shocks/brakes and I will have a better than brand new car
with less than half the payments

Love my TL

is the tranny a bigger problem in the tl-s vs. the tl-p? in most cases the s gets driven harder, but the tranny in my p felt weak from day one. its hard to tell if anything is wrong with it because it is frigidly cold around here now and it shifts hard in the cold.

No there isnt any proof saying Type S fails more. 00-01 have the 5 spd and there is no Type S version for that year and there have still been plenty of failures for those.

My mechanic seems to think the Type S eats up the trannys faster, I don't know if I buy that.

Anyways, I would be happy if mine failed now. I'm actually at about the same mileage you are. However, I still plan to trade her in just before 100K. I guess I can wait until 109K now, right?

P.S. Let us know what you get for a loaner!

I just received notification that the tramsmission warranty was increased again due abnormal amounts of failures. 100,000km to 160,000km to 175,000km or 5 year to 7 year to 93 months from date of purchase

02 tls - tranny & ecu replaced @ 92,000km in December 06

My transmission seems to be doing well with the exception of 2 times when going from 2nd to 3rd gear it seemed to have trouble for about a second. I had the dealership check it out and they said there was nothing reported to the computer nor did it seem that there was a problem with the transmission.
What should I look for before the transmission actually goes out on me?
Are there any cars out there that have not had a problem with the transmission at all?
Thanks!

PS: I drive a 2003 TL-S 48k miles

Supposedly the 5-speeds are less reliable than the 4-speeds. I got the TCC code on my car 2 months ago, so I knew the tranny was going to fail... It's been over 3,000 miles now since the tranny death lights came and my car's still going for some odd reason. Just the other day, the D4 light started flashing and my car would not get out of first gear unless I put it into neutral while I was coasting. After turning the car off and back on again the other day, the light stopped flashing and the car resumed it's normal driving. I've been beating on it every day for the past two months... and the only thing I've noticed was it delaying to go ahead and shift into 2nd, but after that it shifts smoothly to 4th. My problem is, I have the 6mt tranny to do the conversion, but i'm still searching for the right engine... so If the car finally dies, I can do two things: Continue with the conversion and wait around for the new engine, or just use the -P engine with the new 6MT and worry about the bitch I'll have to encounter.

Plat, sucks to see that your tranny died... I just don't understand why mine won't yet. Just doesn't make sense.

Mine took exactly a week before complete failure, I was trying to wait it out so it would show some codes so the dealership wouldnt do to me what they did to you and give me back a car that I know will die.

I'm getting this back next week and after I'm on the 6spd hunt, it will be alot easier for me since I already have the engine for the tranny to link up to.

Alex,
I didnt get my loaner yet, I havent had time to go back to the dealer. I refuse to drive a Ford
