Short ram is well, shorter. The filter cone ends up where the stock air box is. The CAI is longer and goes closer to the road. CAI will give you better performance.

the philosophy of the cold air intake is to run a longer intake pipe away from the engine where it gets hot. colder air has a denser mixture of oxygen which is obviously necessary for combustion. a higher density of oxygen ensures maximum burn in the air/fuel mixture.

the only benefits of a short ram is the use of a higher flow filter which is supposed to increase the amount of oxygen versus the stock air filter. the filter may come with an air horn which smoothes airflow promoting more efficient combustion.

of course you pretty much get the same filter in a cold air also.
