How do you remove one..
What are the +'s and -'s to removing one.

okay well, now a response by someone who's NOT totally anal.....hehe j-k... The intake resonator is a black box in your bumper that the air passes through while getting to the engine....the box makes it quieter,.....if you ask me, it's really stupid. To remove it......it would be really great if you could have the car on a lift, but if not, just park on slope, or ramp up the front. take out your AIR BOX IN YOUR HOOD apart completely, then remove the bumper underbody panel (2 plastic pieces) and take off the 3 screws that hold the box in place.....remove the black rubber/plastic donut between resonator box, and air box.....then......reattach air box in hood, put in air filter and stuff......what's left is a hole below the airbox for a nice flow of fresh (sorta fresh) air...

supposedly, it gives you more power......without an INTAKE it's just good for making a REALLY kick ass sound.

the negative is SOME PEOPLE (although this SHOULD happen to everyone) experience a moderate sounding HUMMMMMMMMMMMM from the air box vibrations because of the size of the hole in the air box....it's perfectly normal and goes away when you rev it up, but is only there at idle....if you want more power i suggest you invest in an intake....

well i hope that helps, if you've got any more questions, you know what to do. -shawn

sorry i didnt mean it in an anal way if that's what it sounds like.
i took mine off by the bumper-removal method. it didn't take too long with the help of a friend. i don't even have the "humming noises" as many people do. still running on the stock filter and no problems what so ever. the new sound of the engine roaring (especially @ higher rpm's) is... so sweet....

btw i have pictures during the removal of the resonator on my acura inspired gallery... check sig for link.

check out this link

I have an '02 and my brother has a 99. They are a little bit different. 99 follow the instruction above. I did it w/o removing the bumper. The '02 is a little smaller resonator.

Anyhoo i just got back from driving her and damn this baby sounds sweet as hell.. Especially when she hits 6900 rpm.

Has anyone found any need to keep the intake resonator after it was removed?

might as well keep it... if you want to sell the car later on you might want to return everything to stock...

I trashed mine, it was annoying to move that big ugly thing around all the time. If you sell your car knowone will even know about it being gone because it looks stock from the engine. If anything they will be happy.

If the air-horn is attached, do you lose your horn? How do you get to the back screws without taking off the bumper?

its not your horn for the car, its a intake "horn" the easiest way to remove the resonator is to remove the bumper. its alot easier than i sounds

I'd say take off the bumper. The idea takes a little time to get used to, but its the easiest way to get in there. I was a bit nervous doing it, but once you loosen it up, it comes off with no problem even if you're just working by yourself.

This is all great and I would love to do this with my car, but I had a HUGE problem (let's just say thousands of dollars worth) involving a CAI and water getting into it and messing up my engine, and my car almost got totaled. If the intake resonator is removed, doesn't it have the same effect as a CAI in terms of being susceptible to water damage? More or less, without your intake resonator can't debris and water and other stuff get into your engine more easily, or does it have nothing to do with it? Someone please help me out because I would love to do this because I miss the sound of my CAI very much...

Has nothing to do with it. And with it removed, it sounds great and the fun is all foot activated. Nice and quiet at low RPM's and aggressive when you stomp on it.

no, it doesnt. The lining protects from the water, plus I have a short ram intake, so the water def. doesnt reach it.

To remove the resonator without removing the bumper, find anywhere where the car can be raised a little so you can get under the car comfortably. Remove the lining blocking the resonator, overthere you have 2 long screws, just use i think 10mm socket to remove it, it a little pain in the ass if you big hands. but its doable, since i did it with my big hands.

good luck.

Matt516,
Actually my thinking would be that it would help reduce water getting into your engine since you are actually raising the point where cold air enters the intake. With resonator you are about half way down the tire where air comes in, without that level is raised up above that. The resonator doesn't have anything to do with blocking water, it is purely for quieting the engine noise down. As far as debris getting in as long as you have an air filter you're fine, removing the resonator has no effect on that. You'll love the sound! I know I do!

removing the resonator on the TL-S WILL make a difference on sound! if you read other wise you read wrong! yes its worth the effort in removing it. its not hard and should only take 10-20 min to do

I removed the air box and y-pipe and found that the unit made more noise at idle too. What solved it was my putting the rubber grommet back on that attaches the intake box to the air box pipe. The annoying hum was gone at idle after I did this.
I believe the vibration is a resonance of the plastic box that houses the air filter. See if that will quiet things down. You do get a nice growl on mid to wide open throttle, and the annoying hum is gone with the grommet re-attachment...
