Intake question...What's that?...
well uhh...let me start by saying a motor needs air and fuel.....the intake is where your motor get the air from. the stock one you have on rite now is queit and restricts air alittle. if you get a after market one, then its louder and less restriction.
welcome to the board.....
An air intake is the part of the car's engine that pulls air into the engine, It is the 2"-3" rubber tube that travels from the engine to the air filter box..
If you've got that much .... here's the rest... When someone puts a CAI Cold Air Intake or a Ram Air/ Short Ram Intake they are increasing the diameter of the pipe delivering the air to the engine... More (or Cleaner, or colder) air the more power.
The Intake stsyems will replace the stock air filter and the stock air intake (the tube that goes from the air box to the engine). Typically the aftermarket CAI systems come with a cone filter, which increases the ammount of air passing through... Once again more air, more power.
The difference between the short ram and the CAI is basically the legnth of the pipe and the final position of the cone filter. The CAI will extend all the way down past the battery into the cavity behind the foglight. A short ram intake is basically a CAI with the long pipe missing.. the pipe is only a foot or two and basically just comes from the engine and makes a 90degree turn and stops (typically this is where the extension pipe goes on, but to have a Short Ram instead of a CAI poeple tend to put the filter here).
So basically if you see a filter in the engine bay it is a short ram, if you see a 2-3 inch aluminum pipe and no filter then the filter is probably burried under the front bumper (To get the most optimum place for sucking in cold air).
The colder the air the denser it is hence the more oxygen is in the air. The CAI will pull coldair from the front of the car and the Short Ram will pull hot air from the engine.. The more oxygen the greater the combustion in the engine, leading to more power..
That's why people get such great numbers from NOS or Nitrous Oxide, they are spraying 50% oxygen and 50% nitrogen (the air we breath has an oxygen level of 20.9% and a nitrogen level of 78% ) into the air intake, causing a huge jump in HP, but at the same time possibly causing problems because of the sharp gain of HP, the owner should be very knoledgable on the topic before to jumping into anything.
Enjoy the verbial diareah.. i hope that clearedup a couple of things, your question was a little vauge and I know you'll be flammed for not searchin...If you've got specific questions

Can someone tell me what is the intake use for?...doesn't it just make the car sound louder with a little bit more Hp?
