intake or k and n filter

Hey guys
Im just wondering what is the alternative to buying a cold air intake?
is it just buying the k and N filter?

you will not get the gains that you do with a true CAI.

intake resonator removal + K&N filter would help a little... but CAI is the best you could do performance wise.

whats the negatives of the cai though? here it can ruin sensors and may drop gas milieage

I don't think that on a stock motor a CAI will do anything for you. Until someone puts up dyno numbers, I'm sticking to my guns. The TL motor has pretty free breathing Intake and exhaust pipework. IMHO its a waste of money unless you plan on doing more serious modding.

To me it was worth it for the sound alone.

in my honest opinion.

and dave. i have to disagree man. its been proven for many years that a CAI frees up power to basically any car thats not equipped with a performance intake as is. otherwize it wouldnt be a commonly used upgrade on not only average joe's car, but on any type of competition vehicle as well.

we're not talking 15 whp... but its gonna give it some life... different numbers for different cars

our stock intake with the resonator is extremely restrictive.

forced induction is of course ideal for power.. but the alternative has always been a CAI. = colder air to the engine increasing power (whether or not is a huge difference)

+1, also maybe for a Type-S it would be more free flowing specially exhaust but for the TL-P it's a way different story we are maddd restricted.

Also no the AEM CAI comes with the a place to put the censor or something I hear, not 100% sure about that never really looked it up.

But as for MPG if you can RESTRAIN yourself from WOT (which is hard with the gain+sound) you should be looking at better MPG.

The only negatives from my own personal experience is that you'll have to be careful when driving through puddles, even with a bypass valve or hydroshield. Otherwise, I love the sound of my Injen CAI!

For gas mileage, I actually feel a slight increase in MPG. Maybe because my old air filter was VERY VERY dirty. But with the CAI, I have seen gains in MPG, not much tho.

^from what i have read u would have to drive thru a high level of water for any kind of damage to occur to the engine...not simple puddles...

correct... getting the intake simply wet wont do much at all.. you have to have constant water streaming to or flowing in the filter to cause damage... a few splashes here and there never hurt anyone...

im running the k&n drop in filter with resonator removed on my cl-s6. felt the diff when i took it off. i say it does teh same as a cai, and if u put a Velocity Stack on a pipe and the pipe going into the intake box ur well over what an intake will give u, also a whole lot more safer. unless ur front end goes into a river and the car is running.

like to the velocity stack

just rip the intake res box out- it attaches to the bottem of the air filter box and sits well above where water can get to easily
the add a K&N filter and have a reasonable setup

Nothing bad is gonna happen. The filter might get dirtier faster. But not by much

its a cleanable filter- what do you care if it gets dirty? cleaner/oil kit is 10 bucks on sale
and last 5 cleanings

In normal driving a K&N can go 30-50kmiles between cleaning
the obsessive in the group do it once a year along with seafoam the intake and gas

Many advantages of the res box removal- its FREE, you would take it out to install a cai anyway!
Those cutout slots on the lower plastic panel of the car allow water to drain out, instead of going up a low sitting front of the car cai pipe. The increased cubic volume of air storage of that entire fender area is beneficial too,
the head tech at dealer even suggested it to me~
Allows the engine intake access to large volume of air instantly, no drawing thru a 4 inch tube past hot engine then to TB when you gas it full throttle

Doesnt affect smog test visual or run test results- still runs at zero and one on the measured numbers in Ca, thats as low as the machine reads!
