Insurance Q: Coverage for aftermarket parts?
Just talked with my insurance company. They said they do not provide any coverage for all the extras I've done to my car.
I've put over $11,000 in parts and accessories on my car. I live in the ghetto. I don't have a garage. I can't change my insurance company - they give me really good rates because I've been with them since I was 16 and when I turn 24 my insurance rates will be very tiny.
Is there any way to insure what my regular insurance company won't? If my rims or stereo get stolen I don't want to be out $4000.
------------------
2001 Silver TL, non-navi, Inspire tails & wood steering wheel, 2 burlwood dash kits & shift knob, TL-S passenger vent trim, Alumapro BP-10 & ZX400TI Phoenix Gold, Python 1500 ESP (remote start, all windows up & down, sunroof closes, prox, etc), factory spoiler & body kit, AEM SRI, blue alarm LEDs, Mugen grill, Comptech sways, springs & exhaust, SuperCrystal lugs, black chrome emblems, Apex'i V-AFC, Solaris 9005 high beams.
On order: 19" Alstadt IVs, 225/35ZR19 Nitto 555s, Fuji digi-cam.

I am sure that if your radio or tires are stolen, you will most likely be covered for the value of the factory replacements, less your comprehensive deductible. They probably mean that they will not increase the value the car is insured for by adding the cost of the mods. I think it is common practice to consider any component bolted on the car as part of the car, and it should be covered. I could be wrong though. Who is your provider?

well for geico, as long as i bring a reciept for what ever i say got stolen, they cover it...rims, tires or whatever, except CD's and DVD's...i found out the hard way when my car got jacked last december...plus i called Acura and a new factory deck was $2,200 no joke...the aftermarket one was definately cheaper...

damn, I would just say that the factory radio was jacked and get my $2,200 minus the deductible, which will still give you $1,700. Good enough for a little aftermarket system.

My insurance company (Liberty Mutual) will conver any piece that was in the car. Speakers, Amps, Rims (and even tires) if they are stolen as long as I provide them with receipts. They will not pay for installation fees and may prorate the payment if for instance you have tires that were $1000 for the set, but they had like 2 years on them. I talked to the rep and had them keep a copy of all my reciepts on file in case something happened to my set and had them verify that everything was in the car and secured (they really wanted to check the amps and make sure they were secured, if they were just left there they would not cover them). This was on my Eagle Talon. I had over 15k in aftermarket parts and stereo equipment. Nothing ever happened, but it was nice to know that I was safe if it did!
Oh yeah, the best thing was that everything was considered a "part of the car" and there was no hike in my rates because of that.

Nate, what I would do is contact the company and ask to purchase a rider.... A rider would increase your premiums but it would be used to cover those items. Don't be suprised if it raises your rates 25%..... And it is entirely possible that your company may not offer a rider at all to you, in which case I'd try http://www.esurance.com . Just for kicks I'd roll through their little quote thingy, or better yet give their number a call. I thought I was doing good with the company I had (was beating all other offers including Geico by atleast 35%), until I ran across Esurance and was able to reduce my rates another 30%. It's worth a look. I thought I couldn't beat CSAA as when I signed with them they rolled all my parents years to me (I had like 27 years immediately) and so I had good rates, but Safeco beat them by 60%, and with the 30% Esurance saved me, that's a lot....

Since I work in auto insurance, I would check out exactly what is covered. You should ask your agent to find out EXACTLY what your policy covers and what it doesn't. I know we take care of things with our clients in situations like this. If you're in Illinois, let me know and I can help.
For a heads-up, any personal property that isn't attached to your car is covered by your Homeowners/Condo/Renter's Insurance (CDs, cell phone, etc.)
