heres the problem. Im 17 years old, i love my mom's TL ( basically i take care of it, wash, oil, etc. ) But i need my own car. Ive saved up 7k in my life for a car, since jr high when ive become obsessed. Problem is, my mom got teh TL cause she wreacked her Subaru. Her insurance has skyrocketed, and we had to switch insurance. I was lookin to put a down payment on a used GSR, or 5th gen Lude, but insurance is an issue. How can i get around this? can i get insured by say my uncle or cousin's plan? a deal i can make w/my insurance comp ? discounts? any other backdoor? Thanks
No backdoors.
period.
The fact that your mom's is hella high on her own (your not on it??)
Probably indicates you should go under your own name. Also remember that anything you owe money on will require FULL coverage, if not, just liability. You can put it in another persons name (I do, I'm 18 and my car is in my grandmother's name, so I pay $400 a YEAR for FULLL coverage with GLASS)
Anyhow, i don't know how im covered, etc. we sorta skirted around it, etc. because I"m not on her insurance at all, they don't know about me. However, I'm assuming that if she lent her car to a friend, and they got in an accident, that should be covered? So she loaned it to me, ya know?
So anyhow, if you can get someone willing to put the car in their name, that'd be good.
Other than that, go to discount classes, etc... rate shop... geico, progressive, prudential... etc. GOOD LUCK!!!

TommyBoiSxty9, I believe they call that fraud.
Not sure what you can do about your insurance... I'm 20 and pay $250 a month for my TL.
BTW, I'm impressed with you being able to save so much money towards something you want. I hope you get something you will love!

if you can't afford the insurance on the tl get something that u can afford. get a 10k car and do yourself a favor...
car shouldn't be your life. don't work hard just to pay for the car. it stupid. because people try to find ways around the insurance others pay premiums for U... it will come back to you one way or the oterh.

slik, im lookin to buy my own car, TL isnt mine, but if i do it under my mom's insurance it would be too much. Ive got 7k saved to put on a down payment. Thats a good idea wit ur grandma's insurance plan hahaha. Could i just put it under my mom's or uncle's name, and put myself as a secondary driver? Damn insurance, i dont care how u put it, they screw u over one way or another. I have no sympathy for them whatsoever

I am 22 and pay $160 a month for the TL with full coverage including glass. I have never been convicted of any tickets. The best thing to do (even though it doesn't seem like it at the time) is to get on your own name for insurance. At first when i got my license i was under my own name due to liability for my parents assets. Even though i paid more it decreased every year and now I am paying less than friends that have used sports cars plus i have established myself as a good driver and in one more year (met life drops the rates at 23, not 24) i will probably have my premiums cut in half.
There is really no backdoors and all scams have been shot down. Plus not many relatives want to risk screwing up their insurance for someone else they can't control. You know what i mean? I won't do it for my 17 y/o sister because i worked to hard to get to where i am today and don't want to go back to paying like 4k a year
Just weigh out all your options and see what the best thing is for you. Also play the insurance companies like you play with dealers....turn each one against each other...tell them u got the same specs with lower rate from company A. It works most of the time.....just my .02

I pay CA$6900 a year, that's like $4700 US a year... Well, but what can I say... I can't put it under my parents' name.
No matter what you do, don't use anyone else's name other than your parents or grand parents... When you got into an accident and the car is under your uncle's name... HOHOHO...

A word of warning to those of you who are "skirting" higher premiums by being a "borrowing the car" driver.
You're playing with fire.
Suppose, God forbid, you are in an accident where someone is seriously or fatally injured. If it was wholly or partially your fault, your potential liability could run into many hundreds of thousands of dollars, or even more. If the company finds out that you are actually the primary driver (and they WILL investigate), you may be faced with a denial of coverage all together. Then you will end up not only fighting the injury/death claim out of your own pocket (i.e., hiring your own lawyer), but also fighting the insurance company over the denial of coverage (more lawyers).
If you lose on both ends, the liability is yours with no insurance to cover it. You could end up losing your car, your (or your parents') house, etc., and having your wages garnished to pay off your liability. How long would it take you to pay off a half-million dollar judgment at 25% of your salary? Or, how about declaring bankruptcy?
Excuse the long post, but I'm not just spouting b.s. here. I've seen it happen. Anyway, you may think you're gettin' over now, but you could end up being VERY sorry you did.

I can't believe the number of people getting raped on insurance. Do you guys have 200 tickets or did you run a red light while drunk and kill a busload of nuns?
I pay $150.00/month for God's Own Coverage and I think that's a lot... now I don't feel so bad.

I am a insurance agt and 8ball is correct. It's just better if you did things the right way because as he said if you or some1 that's
driving you car has a bad accident, the truth normally comes out. They will take statments
from various people that will contradict what
you say. You might have this "bad accident" 5 years from now and they find out that the policy should have been rated for you instead of uncle or g'mom, they may request that ALL payments are due rating you on the car going back 5 years before they pay any parts of the
claim. Actually if you add your car to your mothers policy, she may qualify for a multi-car discount and you will to on your car making the prem a little less exp for both of you. Also maybe should shop around to c if she can get better rate. If your grades are good you may get good student dis,
and if you had drivers ed, you may get another discount. Sorry I posted so long, but I wanted to help.

Since you live in Maryland, I just found that State Farm has a program called steer clear. Its a new program that they just started to help people from the age of 16-25 be more aware of thier driving by making them fill out a survey before they drive. You have to do a certain amount and they will cut your rate a significant amount.
I just talked to my Agent and I used to pay 150 a month and got it cut down to $80/month though good student discount and the steer clear program.
Anyhow check it out.

$100 per month for full coverage and then some. I'm 31, male, living in Dallas with two speeding tickets in last 3 years. I'm on USAA which is a great company, if you can get in.
The extra coverage above and beyond the state-mandated minimum is really inexpensive and a good idea. In Texas, you only need something like 100,000 bodily coverage or something like that. I got 1 million for bodies in accidents, and it was like an extra $50 each 6 months. I did the same for PIP, UIM and property - bought more to cover my butt in case of a terrible (expensive) accident for which I am found to be at fault.
It would be terrible to put someone in the hospital for a long time, let alone not having enough insurance to cover it.
