Input on Mods

I've been searching and reading the forum for a while now and am looking for some help. I'm just trying to make some decisions for my '99 TL. I know these have been discussed, but a lot of the threads I've read are older and I'd like some current input.

The 3A exhaust tips seem to be the popular choice, and I think mufflermall is where a lot of people get them. What inlet size and what tip size should I do? I think it's 3" or 3.75", depending on preference, but inlet is what? I've read varying comments. Anybody have a part number or link?

I would like to do a mid-muffler delete. I don't plan on doing headers or a full exhaust on this car; I just want it to sound a little better. Should I leave the resonator on and just delete the mid-muffler?

For CAI, I don't want to spend a lot, and I've read a lot of threads about ebay ones versus the more expensive options. I don't want to pay $200+ for one, but where are people getting these now and what brands (it seems like the selection/availability has changed over the years)?

Thanks in advance!

Well there is a few things you can do. For the cai you can do one of three things. You can do the cheaper option which is a short ram. I hear it's mostly for sound. I'm sure it gives you some hp just not as much as a cai. The second optio you can suck up and get the Cai. And the third is to take out the intake resonator and put in a k&n air filter. It's just like having a cai except you won't have the risk of sucking up water. For sound you can do a mid muffler delete which will give you a little bit of a louder sound. Or you can do what skirmich has done and do an axle back straight pipe. His forum is "my straight pipe sound"

I'd start with the intake resonator delete and mid-muffler delete and see how you like that, and then go from there. It'll only cost about 30-40 dollars for a muffler shop to cut out your mid muffler and replace with straight pipe. Intake resonator is an easy DIY job. There's a DIY guide on the DIY sticky:

Thanks, I appreciate the comments. I think from what I've heard and continued to read that I'll leave the exhaust resonator and delete just the mid muffler. I found a decent CAI with K&N filter I'm leaning towards.

I'm just trying to figure out exactly which 3A tips to order.

Which 3A tip would look better, the slant cut or straight cut? I'm going to order off of mufflermall.com, doing the 3.25".

Isn't our mid muffler the exhaust resonator? When I had mine done it went headers>cat>mid muffler(by the trunk)>y pipe> other mufflers.

It should have been in the middle of the cat and the mid muffler. If I remember correctly

Then mine didn't come with one..... It was the old dirty factory piping... No welds on it from a cut and install of straight pipe... No wonder my car doesn't sound tooo much louder with the mid muffler delete...

This is what ive found.

This is the exhaust from our cars. You were correct in saying the resonator(#12) is between the mid muffler(2nd red arrow)and the Cat(#4area). as shown n the pic. HOWEVER my exhaust did not have that. mine did however have the heatshield from above the resonator(25) attached to the car.
My car is weird. it was factory straight pipe to the Mid muffler. Not its straight pipe from the cat to the y pipe. What could be reasoning it was factory reoved or not included at al?l

Only the 00-01 and the 02-03 TL-S have that resonator in the middle before the mid muffler.

The 99 and the 02-03 TL-P cars don't have it. If I remember correctly.

I looked and I think Karanx7 is right.

Finally put the tips on today. The CAI came, so that's next.
