Initial results of K & N filter experiment

A few weeks ago I posted a question about gain in gas mileage and performance with a drop-in K & N filter. I am no expert on cars, so I can't say anything about increased performance. I did monitor my gas mileage before and after I used the drop-in filter. Please note that I use SS rather than D5, and that I have about 60%/40% city/freeway miles.

Before:
18 mpg
19.8 mpg

After:
20.8 mpg
20.3 mpg

I've filled up my car with gas four times since I've owned it, all listed above. It looks like I get a minimal increase in gas mileage with the filter--nothing dramatic enough to exhort the rest of you to run out and spend $40 on this. If what K & N says is true, the mileage should improve with time. We'll see, and I'll follow up if I note any significant changes. I'll also try to go for a whole tank driving with only D5 to determine whether that makes a difference.

Comments?

I put this filter in as well. Any AutoZone can order one and have it the next day if they don't have it. It won't be in the computer but you can have them order K&N part # 33-2178. Anyway ... I've had it for a month and have noticed about 2mpg as well. (50/50 driving city/hwy). Noticeable increase in power during a pedal masher, too!

Your mileage and performance gains are due to something else... not the K & N filter. I have one too, and the only benefit is that you can clean the filter whenever it is dirty and then reuse the same filter. Over the life of the car, this will end up being cheaper than buying a bunch of replacement filters.

The K & N gives me *NO* mileage or performance gains.

Different for everyone I guess ... nothing else has been done to my car other than bulb changes so I doubt they effected my gas mileage and performance.

Like I said, I'm not sure how to tell there's any performance improvement. I don't know anyone with a dynometer. . I haven't done anything else to my car (it's brand new) other than to add the filter. I haven't changed my driving style (mostly SS with some hard driving). I therefore don't have any other explanation for the (teenyweeny) improvement.

I agree with you--spending $40 now will prevent my spending $10-15 every 15-20k miles (or whatever the required interval is), and will therefore save me money over the long run.
