Info on replacing your auto trans

This is a callout to members of this forum on the trans issue alot of us have. Needing a rebuilt or used trans and not going the way of the 6 speed because realistically some are either not financially able to do so or not willing to undertake the work needed to do it(searching for parts, modding required).

This forum would not be what it is if we didnt have the support of the many contributors. The reason I started this thread is to get all info we can for replacement of the auto trans with a rebuilt or used trans with compatible fitment.

I want to get posters from people who have done 99 4-speed swaps as well as people doing 00-03 5-speed swaps. Please let everyone know what your trans was swapped with and parts needed and also time driven on and your current feel with your "new" trans.

I would like to keep the info in here as correct as possible because theres alot of speculation as to what can actually be used so if you dont know just say you dont know. Reason being is that I would like this to turn into a sticky eventually. I would like this information readily accessible for the current and new owners.

Thanks to all and all help is warmly appreciated.

I just ordered my replacement transmission from Willow Creek Transmissions in South Carolina. My mechanic called them to feel them out as to whether they were legit or not, he seemed satisfied with them not being a PO box somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

They said they would ship today and I should have it Friday. $1395 + $300 core + $260 shipping. The $260 covers round trip shipping.

I will update once I get it and have it installed. I already picked up the 8 quarts of trans fluid from the Honda dealer in Cedar Rapids, so should be ready to go.

He told me they have had a lot of questions on the PCM's, he said they don't replace them unless the customer requests it, says their transmissions will work with the originals and the only benefit of upgrading is the reduced performance and updated shift points which may extend the life, but they didn't feel it was worth the $1000 for the PCM and Throttle cable required with the PCM change.

This transmission has a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty, and for an additional $150 (I didn't opt for it), they will cover labor up to $600 in the event it fails during the 2 years.

They use a high energy clutch plate which contains Kevlar and other things mixed in that are supposed to be far superior to the OEM plates. They also use a enhanced torque converter that they said works better than the original in prolonging the life.

We'll see how it works out.

Just wanted to contribute what I could to this thread.

I should hopefully have a fully fixed transmission by next week.

I will keep my posting updated as it progresses.

Thats great news! I now realize I should have named the thread 'replacement trans options'. The title is misleading. But im glad you posted your experience.

Youre getting a rebuilt TL unit? Im currently in research for all the options available. I need to send out some pm's to some of the members with this kind of experience.

Thanks for comin by. Let us know how it turns out.

It's a rebuilt, with upgraded clutch plates and torque converter. Someone else posted they got the Odyssey transmission for $1200 + $1100 core, so I figured I was close enough that I wanted the correct trans instead of a possible issue with getting the wrong Odyssey transmission since we still don't have definitive info on which years. All I've seen so far says 2nd gen Odyssey with 3.5l engine. Really hoping someone posts specifics to this thread.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_O...(North_America)

I love wiki!

Anyway it shows gen 2 Honda Odyssey btwn 99-01 as a 4-speed and 02-04 years as 5-speed auto. These are the 3.5L. This is good news as there are options for the 99 and 00-03 for us. It also shows related autos to the Odyssey so I'd like to see which used the same engine and I believe those trannies could work too.

I found the list of honda transmissions ever made but it cant be complete. I didnt see the 6 speed in there. And you can find your transmission family there too. I dont know if you can use any other from the same family without problems. It does seem like the family internals are the same but im sure somethings different between each one.

This company provides kits for upgrading internals to make the trannys stronger.

Still looking for the 4 speed model and trans breakdown but the 5 speed model and trans was on wiki. I know the 99TL uses the B7VA trans though.

Now need to see what the differences between the trans are.

And what do all these links have to do with your question. Kinda just adds to the confusion and clutter

Ive searched before but all I could find were individual posts in different threads using different trans. Ody here, 7g accord there. I wanted to know if there were any more sources out there and have it all in one place.

Sorry about the clutter tho. I was posting as I found info. Getting close to the answer tho. But I cant find what the differences between these trans are.
