Lightbulb I need help mastering my chariot!!

I have a 2000 TL-P (I'm assuming TL-P is the regular tl and TL-S is obviously the Type-S, right?) and I usually drive it in D4 unless i am on the highway, when I use the 5th gear. For everyday use though, what does everyone use? I only use the sportshift when I'm racing someone or when I'm driving on a hill or in rain or something...but for regular everyday cruising, should i keep it in D5? I just want to know the most efficient way to drive it in auto mode everyday...and also, I know what VTEC is and what it does, but I think I need a little more info. How do I "activate" VTEC? How can I be sure when it kicks in? also, I saw in another thread someone saying to hold 3rd until 105 or so and hit 4th to activate VTEC...won't they put unnecessary wear on the third gear? Or am I just too cautious? Thanx everyone! Also, I noticed that there are two people from Japan on here? Where you guys at? Talk to me! I'm from japan too and I go back every summer...but I've lived in Hong Kong for too long...picked up too much chinese and english...lol...let me know I'm not the only Japanese guy!!!

inless you are driving at a speed at or around 45-50 and the transmisson is constantly searching between 4th and 5th i would just leave it in 5th. if the speed you drive makes it want to hunt alot, leave it in 4th until you drive faster and it wont want to hunt. ass far as activating VTEC, you cant. its computer controled to activate around 4500 rpm. i mentioned holding it in 3rd to around 105 in the other thread so that when you shif from 3rd to 4th you would still be in the vtec range. if it shifts on its own, it wont be in vtec range when it goes into 4th an dyou will have to wait for it to engage. as far as hurting any thing, nah it wont

yah

So VTEC is computer controlled...if i ever want to activate it, i would have to use the manual mode, right? If I wanted to activate it say around...25 mph, i would keep it in second until it hits 4500rpms? So i don't have to worry about overworking the gears or anything by revving it high...that's good to know. I've only ever drove an M5 at high revs...but that was a stick...I'm still getting used to the tiptronic...it's my first auto...(lol) Any other driving tricks you know of so I can take advantage of the engine I have at my disposal?

it doesnt matter if you are in SS or full auto, or the selected gear in the gate. just floor it. once it hits the desired rpm VTEC will engage

So what exactly should I look for when it engages? I've been told there's an audible difference from the engine...ar there any lights or anything? Should I know anything about driving it around with VTEC engaged?

Talking

"You'll know when it kicks in...." Now THAT'S the answer I was hoping to hear. It's always cool when there's no way to describe a rush...except for, "You'll know it when it comes" If there's a noticeable sound difference with an intake...what air intakes does everyone recommend? Someone once told me I should go all comptech because if i ever trade it in, it'll look more like stock and I will get more cash for a trade...is this true?

when you drive you hear a vrrrroooommm....when VTEC kicks in it go VVVRRRROOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!
haha...was that a good enough discription? As for your question what people use, I use my SS all the time. At first I didn't use it at all but now I can't drive without it. Even when I'm in my MDX I feel an urge to shift. I guess it's just a force of habit now. So I pretty much use SS all the time.

comptech is the best intake for our cars.

but to answer your question, go out and get in your car. drive it like up a on ramp or a fairly bigs street and floor it. watch the rpm, when it hits around 4500-4700 there should be a rush in the acceleration and there also should be a difference in sound.
