I can't believe I got smoked by a Z3!
Well, unfortunately I don't have type S, but I got the 2002 TL-P. From a dead stopat a light, this older guy (35-40?) gave me a look as if he wanted some kind of race. I'm down with that! I just thought, eh, a fat guy in a Z3 would be no problem. Boy was I ever wrong! When the light turned green, he got a split second head start and I slammed onto the pedals all the way! But even then he pulled away from me, about 1-1.5 cars length ahead of me. Not wanting to do anything too stupid, I stopped accelerating at around 100km/h (it was an 80km/h zone). I couldn't believe and realize how fast a BMW Z3 can go! Luckily enough, another light put both of us at a stop shortly thereafter. He looked at me again with a nasty smerk on his face and I was a bit pissed. So we did it again, but this time I was using SS instead of D5 and I let the car redline! We had a more or less fair start but the prick still beat me! This time it was by about 1 cars length.
I was pretty ticked, but I ended up calming myself down by telling myself that I had winter tires on, so that made the difference which caused me to lose! But I still couldn't believe a fat guy in a Z3 beat me.....

Are you sure it wasn't an M///? If so, it would of smoked you worse. He could of had it modded. Did you spin your tires? What rpm do you power brake to?
Even if you lose, try to do it with class and give the guy (or girl? ) props. It's all about sportsmanship.

If it was a Z3 with the new 3.0 engine, he'd beat you every time no matter what your tires were. They're damn quick cars! I drove one and it felt quicker than my Type S to me but not to my friend that was with me. Maybe it was just the manual tranny that made it feel that way. On paper, they're pretty much dead even 0-60 with the Type S.
I would guess that even the 2.5 would give a TL-P a good run for it's money.

Loving my 08 TLS!
Common sense man, look at the size of the car. It is like half the size of our TL so it weights a lot less. And if it has a 3.0 liter, he will blow you away no matter what tires you have.

My wife has a 2.8L Z3 manual and I had a TL-P before my GS430. I can attest personally that the Z3 is a hands-down winner in acceleration vs. the TL-P, and the 3.0L loaner we got one time was substantially torquier than our 2.8L (making me want to chip my wife's car, of course!).
BMW claims a 5.9 second 0-60 for the 3.0i manual, and my butt-o-meter definitely confirms that. It's a light car with a great engine and a manual transmission facilitating great launches.
A stock TL-S doesn't match up well in a stoplight race against a stock Z3 3.0i, much less a TL-P.

I barely beat my friends 330 ci manual from 0-100 MPH, so if it was a 3.0 manual Z3, I'm sure he would have pissed on your TL-P. By the way you describe it, it probably was a 2.8 Z3.
