How to verify a check engine code?

Is there a way I can verify the code on a check engine light on my own, or do I absolutely have to go to the dealer? and where can I get the codes' description?

And also if it is just something I can fix myself, will the light will turn off by itself when it's fixed?

thx

any shop that has a computer to read codes, dealer, and some auto parts stores will read codes for you. if you find the code im sure some one here with the manual can loook up the code for you
as for turnning the light off you can do that by resetting the computer by unplugging the battery for a awhile (best to un hook while doing the repair).

another solution is to buy a OBD II code reader:

$129 listed. you may find it for less.
