How much to pay?
In the process of negotiating a deal on new 2003 TL Type S with Navi.
What's a good going price?
I think I can get what the dealer calls invoice (but what I know is actually like 500 bucks above invoice).

28000-29000 without the Nav. So stack on another 1500-2000 for the nav. Mine was a little higher (w/o Nav) but I think you guyz can get it cheaper in Jersey. Don't forget to factor in the hold back and when you decide to actaully buy it. Might swing a better deal right at the end of the month. But then again, the car sells pretty easily.
As far as extras, buy them aftermarket, I did the mistake of getting the factory spoiler and moonroof visor because at the time I didn't want to deal with it. Good luck !!

Ok, the manufacturers sell the vehicle to the dealer at invoice. After ever quarter, the manufacturers talley up their sales numbers, post them, etc. With that number, they pay out a holdback to the each dealer. This number is usually like 2-6%. I think Acura's is like 3% these days. So if a dealer sells a car at say $1 over invoice, they are probably getting a 2%-6% check from the manufacturer. It's not really a kick back, although it seems that way.
In general, dealers don't like the fact that the consumer knows what a holdback is, and maybe a lot of people don't know about it. In essense, you really can't claim it as yours, but it gives you a better sense of what the car is worth and what you're paying out. But heck, $500 over invoice isn't bad at all IMO, but maybe the dealer is willing to go down an extra $250 under. It's all relative.
Also, since the Acuras sell pretty well, most dealers don't have to really sell the car. At lease relative to American car dealers. They're really selling a deal rather than a car. That's the buzz with all the 0% finacing.
So what's the point of the holdback ? The dealer is a very important part of the manufactuer to end customer chain. After all they represent the "customer satisfaction" portion of the whole picture. So it is in the manufacturer's interest to have the dealer roll out as many cars as possible. Let's face it, it's a business and you gotta pad the pockets to keep people happy. There's also the super well guarded incentives that the dealers.
Just remember this, bottom line, you are the customer, you want to buy the car, don't be sold a car......kinda hard though since the TL Type S is so sweeeeeeet. : )
This make any sense ?

Yeah, thanks.
I know what holdback is, but I didn't know there was any currently between American Honda and the Acura dealerships for the TL-S.
invoice is, from what i can tell, about 31K for the type-S with navi, i'm being offered 31.5K

I think it's at that 3% range. I forgot what site I saw this on. I bought mine back in November. Will hash through the bookmarks and post if I find it.
Just buy it....what's money ?!?! Put 31.5K in your driveway and stare at it for an hour. Hmmm....not that fun. Now put a Type S there......Hmmm..... much funner. (funner's a word :p )

Hehe, funny, I think a lot of the members on this forum know more than the dealers. I remember when I was looking around I asked if they were going to have the 6 speed in the TL and the guy was like, "yeah, they put it in that TL over there" as he pointed to the CL. I wish I found this forum before purchasing. Would've found out a lot more info here.
Aegean Blue is what I went with.
Anthracite.....ehhh, not to my liking. Black looks really nice on the TL, but hard to keep clean. I've owned 2 black cars before and unless you're washing it like every week (I did for a while), black is always a challenge.
You can always get the green :yack:

I got my 2003 TL-S with NAVI for 32K out the door. Most of my buddies say that I got a really good deal. I think the only reason I got a good deal is because I paid the full amount up front. I chose the Navi over the OEM Body kit.

Was the color you chose on the lot?

I paid $32K (plus tax and tags) for my TL-S (NHBP), NAVI, OEM Spoiler, moonroof visor, and wheel locks.
If you use dealer cost for the options, I think it works out like this: (This is from memory)
~$350 - OEM Spoiler
~$50 - Moonroof Visor
~$30 - Wheel Locks
~$1500 - Navi
So thats $31570 with the Navi, and about $30000 without. So $31-$31.5k with just the Navi sounds like its on the money, especially if they're "throwing in" the protection package (Wheel Locks, Trunk Tray, Mud flaps)

I plan on getting an 03' TL-S some time just before the 04's come out. I also plan on putting down $20,000 cash (well, bank check from my savings anyway) and financing the rest. With that much in hand do you think I can get a Type-S for? No Navi, no add ons (spoiler, ground effects etc.) accept for mud flaps, Diamond White, Parchment interior.
The trunk mat I can create from a generic mat for the back of an SUV like for my Talon and I'm sure I can get wheel locks cheaper.
I took a couple of test drives already and this past Sunday I cruised to the dealer only this time I went to the back lot where the stock is kept. They had 4-5 in Diamond White but I'll be damn if I forgot to see if any had Parchment interior.
The only other dealer had pretty much he same stock but in Silver/Black.
Hopefully this new addition will happen between October 03' and January '04.
Early March the Auto Show is in town and man I'm gonna do everything I can to pump those people for information on the 04's!

Don't think the amount you put up front makes a difference in the price. I don't think it does, anyway. Most it would affect is your interest rate on the amount you finance. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, though.
For what it's worth, I paid $31,500 (before taxes, licensing) for my '03 TL-S with Nav. That's about $500 over invoice, and I was happy with that price. Dealer holdback is 3%, and with the car being brand new, off the truck, I knew the dealer was making an additional $900 on the sale. I don't know if I'd necessarily use the knowledge of dealer holdback to work on the price, but more power to you if you can.
Sounds to me like some folks were working their deal from the other end of the spectrum -- getting "additional" stuff thrown in, which ends up being cheaper for the dealership than knocking down a dollar amount. This could take the form of add-ons to the car, or even service benefits like free oil changes, etc.

I don't think there is any dealer holdback currently on the TL. It's not listed on Edmunds and I have the latest (2/11/03) issue of CarDeals and it's not listed there (although the CL has a $1K holdback, the RL $3500)
CarDeals pretty much has the latest holdback info for every make and model out there.
I think I can swing 31.5K as a deal.
Also, the dealer is willing to add in my remaining lease payments on my current car (including excess mileage payments), on to the cost of the car.
The advantage of this is that they take my lease from me (so I'm not adding any excess miles - the bank refuses to take it back early without a heavy penalty, even if I make all the payments I owe them) and the money I'd be owing in remaining lease payments and excess mileage would be spread across the financing period (5 years or whatever, albeit with 4-5% interest).
