How Much for a new Transmission?

I have a 2002 TL-S with a slipping transmission. I am curious how much people are being charged for a new transmission? The local dealer wanted $5600 for a 3yr 36month guaranty. My local mechanic wants $2650 for a 1 year 12K warranty.

Tx

Is it slipping from 2nd to 3rd on hard throttle? Flashing D5 light on dash?
Any fault codes?
Sometimes you can band-aid the trans by cleaning the solenoids and external filter change.

do NOT rebuild your current trans!!!! Its not worth it!!
You can get one direct from Hondas rebuilding shop in a plain white box for less, but still has the same problems

The options most are going with are: junkyard/used Accord trans from crashed car
Drops in with little modification, and is a better design internally
Cost $500-750 parts and labor runs about 500-750 ~$1500 total
OR
the 6 speed manual trans from a CL-S, a LOT more work-a DIY job for the experienced. For your efforts you get a manual trans in the TL

Who has a current price on the conversion?

Look at the main thread title list for details on both

Respected local transmission shop wanted $3500 for a drive in/drive out and $2000 for a bench rebuild.
I never checked with a dealer. You are braver than I.

First your dealer should be gut punched. I wanted to shoot my dealer when he said 4k, 2 years ago. Your local mechanic that wants $2,650 is inline and even decent on warranty. I would probably quiz him, as to what your getting for $2,650 and his experience with transmissions. (if he says there all the same, run) I've heard of a couple of guys getting saved by cleaning the solenoid or replacing it, but not sure for how long. Most guys are going with the accord swaps. Before I knew of the accord swap, I went with a rebuilt TL trans from Willow Creek out of South Carolina for like $1,700 delivered two years ago. That came with a 2 year, unlimited mile warranty. They at least seem to understand the TL's shortcomings and did a few things that may help.(maybe) They sell rebuilt ones with mods. I had a local transmission guy install it for like $1,300.00 at the end of the day, which I thought should really be about 1k, if he has a decent shop and pays his taxes. My total was a bit over $ 2,900.00. It’s been 2 years and 50k for miles with no problems. If I were to do it over, I would probably have tried to find a more trustworthy shop to do the install. I think I would still buy a rebuilt tranny from Willow Creek, but put a 2006 Accord tranny in it. 2 year warranty with unlimited miles says something. You may even ask your local mechanic about WC transmissions have him check them out as a source for the replacement. Good luck, but I would get a plan in place, because when it actually goes, it's more difficult to make smart, logical decisions from the passenger seat of a tow truck.

warranty length doesnt mean squat!!!

I can build a POS and tell you it has 5 Years warranty,,but the details of that warranty dont end up costing me a penny!!
while you the buyer will pay quite a bit more for labor and other charges!

If the guy quoting trans rebuilds cant show proof of at least 5 successful rebuilds
on a gen2 TL trans in the last 6 months- all working perfect now 6 months later ...
He is talking out a few holes

You may have guessed by now = these are not normal tranamissions

pick up a used 06-07 Accord V6 trans and have a shop install it and call it a day. I wouldnt waste my time or money on a rebuilt or having it rebuilt.

warranty length doesnt mean squat!!!

not sure if that was directed at me, but feel I should clairify what I meant by shops offering warranties. If a shop guy says he will rebuild it, and hasn't done at least 5 rebuilds of 2nd gen, joining what 01tl4tl says, he is not your guy. Warranties don't mean squat, correct, but the quality of shop is more closely defined by the warranty they may offer. The shops I interviewed to drop in a used tranny, warranty was like 30 days tops. If the trans wasn't trash when it was installed. If it runs the first day, its gonna run for 30. 30 days is really nothing and those warranties are even full of outs. Some didn't even offer a warranty at all if i brought them the used tranny. My point really was that the ones that offer more of a warranty are a better shop or offer a better product, because we live a world of what comes around goes around. I chose to go with WC because they are keen to honda's problems and try to address them, instead of ignoring them. (they have a blog that talks about this.. blah, blah) Back to the warranty, they offer a 2 year unlimited miles. If I ship my tranny back to them within 2 years, they ship me another one. This was before I knew of the accord swap, but I just thought. If all I'm gonna get from a mechanic is a 30 day warranty from a junk yard transmission, that I don't know might be it way to the crapper and I'd have to start all over. I just paid a little extra for what I thought was a better product and the fact that they stood behind their solution to honda's problems with a warranty. They said they have gotten a few trannies back, but they also ship probably one out per day. Back to my point, in general warranties don't mean squat, but the shops that offer more length, is typically a shop that stands behind their work and who you want to be talking to.

or their sales dept has figured out how to pull the wool so to speak

If you have to pay removal- shipping, and installation cost at home for about $1000,
be it 2, 3, or 5 years
that's no warranty! that's salesmanship!!

30 days on used parts is normal, if its going to fail it usually will in that period.
The accord trans are so much better than TL trans - that its likely the donor car was smashed in the back end,
leaving an unmolested low miles trans for us!

I paid about $4K for my rebuild in '11. I vaguely remember seeing the rebuild sheet and it pretty much included all new internal components + TC. However, $4K is a ridiculous amount when you consider that you can pick up an AV6 (if you can find one) and install it for $1500.

So the short of it is that you should NOT rebuild this transmission. That is a very bad financial decision.

How much work is the 2006-07 Accord transmission install? The guy doing it has done several transmissions and my mechanic who is the in-between guy says that he's never had a problem with this transmission guy before.

look at the top threads in the main section list--where you are now, see the `swap thread` with all the info on DIY and for techs to verify-
installation:
