Oh I just meant that's why they give a range for oil level instead of a single, optimal value. It's the same reason the temperature gauge is dumbed down and barely functional. The average driver will be fine if they are half a quart low.

1/2 qt low is 1/10th of the cooling and lubricating capacity and abilty of the car -=removed!

yes its `ok` but max/FULL is obviously the preferred level
anything else is just how much above MINIMUM it is

our water temp guage is great- it has lines and a dead steady position- that if it ever varies- you know right away there is a problem
better than the idiot oil light-- I prefer actual pressure numbers- you would be shocked how little oil pressure is happening at idle example 15 psi, and at hard throttle into vtec ~50psi!!

thats why I got a/r about using seafoam in the oil,,clean oil passages and pickup system, pump- are critical to a TL engines happiness
fsttyms1 got me started on the stuff, blame him!
then once I used it, realized it was the very same stuff that came with the `injection cleaning machine` we had in the shop!... way back in the day!!

Yea, I saw a couple YouTube videos of engines that didn't have an oil change in 30k. SOOO much sludge!

And ive seen motors with 30+k on the oil with no sludge. Mine has no sludge with 15k+ intervals.

Must be all that seafoam. I've never put seafoam in my crankcase and when I did my valves at 105k, the inside was spotless. Regular oil changes really help. If anyone is concerned about sludge, pennzoil makes oils that are really good at cleaning the sludge up. Everything from their convention yellow bottle to their synpower.

Why us in the 2G TL would do what it says in the manual for a 3G TL? Not same engines, Not same Oil Capacity, Not the same Car.

Just pour 5qts its almost Dead drop Perfect match in the Dipstick.

That's a small hole! When I worked at the dealership a brand new explorer came in with same issue but he didn't have fun causing it like you. His rod from the 5.0 left a hole big enough for my hand to reach into the oil pan lol. Sorry it blew up on ya though just gives opportunity to build it better!

Well, that was the idea...to have my 3.5 built and ready before this motor failed. Just have to do it faster now.

OK, I know ths seems silly but I've been around cars all my life and the basic thing you're taught by your father as a boy is how to check the oil. I have the TL and before I had a 91 Accord. So, here's the issue:

When I pull the dipstick out and wipe it off and then stick it back in to get your correct reading....this dipstick always looks the same, sort of smeared from one end of the fill line to the other. I know the car is leaking oil (the idiots that I allowed to change the oil overtightened and I haven't been able t get under it to fix it because I've just had carpal surgery on both hands). I see it in my driveway, my friend's driveway, just about everywhere i'm parked for a period of time.

I cannot get any kind of accurate reading on the oil level! It's driving me crazy and making me nervous. Any ideas, thoughts, tips? Thanks in advance!

The Engine oil should be between the Upper and Lower Dots once its reached its normal temperature (1-2 marks beneath middle Temp Gauge).. If the mark is inconsistent just try again once the oil starts to sit then it should give you a clean line.

If the Engine is COLD the Oil Should be on the Upper Dot! With 5qts of Oil it must be always sitting there....

Basically if you change your oil + filter the excess of the 4.7 vs the 5q is filling the Filter. I always install the filter Dry, If you fill it before installing with the same 5q then you have around 4.7q left so full engine gets 5q!

Ditto^^^^
Are ya checking the dipstick when the oil is cold ? That's always a more accurate reading on a level surface.

If ya think that the oil pan's drain plug may be leaking, get a friend to look things over.

Seeing a puddle all the time can't be a good thing. Try to isolate the source of the leak, before you end up with starving your motor of it's life. It would be well worth having the car put up on a rack to diagnose the situation asap !

Thumbs up

I just have never seen a dipstick like this. I've always been able to read the levels on any vehicle I checked. Someone else looked at it as well and thought the same thing. I'm about to leave work and drive to Louisiana for the holiday, so I'm going to check it in the pkg lot and see what the story is. I know it's the drain plug, it's been checked all around and I know who caused it initially. I will probably fix it while I'm in Louisiana this weekend (much warmer down there than Oklahoma!)

Have a happy holidays! Thanks for the responses....I was just so befuddled!

Hey Ronbinokc, A trip from Oklahoma to Louisiana may not be good for your nerves or the car, imo. Take a mental break and think about the repercussions of procrastination when dealing with this potentially risky problem.

Waiting to inspect or repair the leak, until you reach warmer weather is a poor excuse to neglect your car !

Sorry man, just do the right thing.

Fill the filter so you dont have a moment of no oil pressure, and just dump the remaining oil in. 5 quarts wont hurt a thing.

You could use 0w-20 if you are really aiming for a MPG difference.

0W-20 is for extreme cold weather.
0W-30 should be the minimum.

2-4 additional psi in the tires will bring more mpg than 0w30 will.

^^ That sound really generic hahaha... 5qts are close to the mandatory 4.8liters they use on the JDM Spec... 5qt = 4.75-4.80lts..
