How many miles on your rebuilt tranny?
#2
Rebuilding a poorly designed tranny is a hit and miss random luck thing with holding up.
Usually it depends on the integrity of the shop, the parts used, and most importantly the warranty. Other than that, it's playing "russian roulette".
Recently, many have had good luck with replacing their old TL tranny with the improved and more durable AV6 tranny.

I have a remanufactured one from Honda. The old one was replaced with this one and has a new torque converter. It has 20,000 miles on it.
If this one fails I am going with a 06/07 Accord tranny.

5 of them in 220k miles. Not very good.

40k on a Honda warranty replacement in 2008. No issues yet, but it's not enough miles to say anything about longevity.
Note - did a single drain/fill at 30k with new Honda fluid. The shifts are now silky smooth.

I don't have shifting/slipping issues yet - it shift silky smooth. I do have a whining and whirring sound that most shops think it's the differential. It would still cost close to an overhauls of tranny since it needs to be removed and opened up. I just turn the radio up so i don't hear it.. Yeah i have 50k on this Acura replacement tranny.

I'm at almost 4k on the 4 speed tranny since i have a 99. Shifts smooth until idle issue kicks in and than starts to studder at exactly 45 mph and i get a quick rev coming to a stop. Super annoying but the car is a 99 and was in abusive relationships before so alot of components were neglected and need replacing. Slowly but surely

about 15k and it sucks. It slips out of gear when it's cold out and the car isn't warmed up. Don't ever ever get these transmissions rebuilt. AV6 is the way to go, and much cheaper than the $3000 or so it cost to have the rebuild done.

I think a lot of us have a rebuilt and are trying to find out how long we can expect to go until it fails. My 2002TL is at 95k with 40k on the rebuilt. If I were to replace it when it does eventually fail, it would be the AV6 donor. But, I plan on moving on before that happens.

5k fluid is red, yearly drain and fills still running smooth. I want it to fail already lol

'99 with 4 speed AT......

Yeah, the '99 trannys were the older 4 speed design......but were much more durable than the newer poorly designed 5 speed. If ya had a good rebuild on your 4 speed with a warranty, ya should be good for awhile.
There are other things that can cause issues similar to what ya described. Make sure that the TB intake, EGR, IAC, are clean and working well to improve idle quality. Have the mounts checked also.

I have had a rebuilt AV6 trans since February 24 of last year, and have put 22,300 miles on it. Still runs and shifts like a dream. And I don't baby it, by any means!
Now I just have to kill this AV6 trans so I have a reason to go 6 speed

Had the transmission replaced by my Acura dealer with the "updated" version back in Feb 2009 at no charge, due to the dreaded D5 light flashing on the dash. Car had 57K miles on the clock at the time.
Since then I have driven 75K miles with no problems, I change the fluid every 25-30K miles with Honda DW-1 and changed the in-line filter a few weeks ago. Found it at Advance Auto Parts, looks exactly like the one Honda installed, only cost around $20 after a discount.
So far, so good!!

Thing is fatty... I don't want to be lucky hahaha
I'm always hesitant "Will this be the last day of my trans?" and I cant afford to lose it since its my daily driver.. I´m surprised in so many ways with this rebuilt trans.

^^ I really should cuz right now the Rebuild trans just out-lived the Original factory clutch packs XD dunno what kind of magic clutch packs I've got with 1300 bucks in rebuild... I mean, Even the shop that did it? its gone! got bankrupt I suppose? but Its not there anymore...
But since I'm at 100K? Might as well break the "Cheap = Cheap" Taboo.. Acura wanted 3800 at the time for a Rebuilt replacement trans I just Lol´d Hard...

I had to replace mine the week I bought it. Under my state's law, if a buyer notices a significant issue with a vehicle in less than a week after purchase, the seller is liable.
After the tran slipped into N when trying to shift into 3rd during accel a few times, the MalF light came on. Since I lived in a small town at the time, I personally knew the only shop owner that had the ability to turn off the lamp. I called him up and sure enough, the dude had it turned off before selling it to me.
He paid $2k out of pocket and Acura covered the other $2k. That was in 2009. It's been running well ever since. Best car I've ever had.

I have a crapped out tranny right now .. most of the shops say the rebuilt ones are 'updated' and more reliable than the originals .. anyone know anything that contradicts that? They all get real clammy and defensive if I mention the AV6.
#24
Nope...... they may use Sonnex parts in the rebuild and it maybe more reliable than the crap Honda put in the car originally... so this can be considered a true statement. This doesn't however mean the rebuild is better than the AV6 swap from a value perspective (In your favor not the shops). There is probably more profit margin for the shop for the rebuild versus the swap (I'm not 100% on this as I am not in the business. This is speculation.)

The "AV6" tranny from the '06>'07 Accord V6 is the cost effective choice of many here recently, because it offers the much more improved internal design and is a simple bolt in replacement to our poorly designed problematic 2nd Gen TL 5 speed trannys.
The AV6 and installation is a simple durable alternative to rebuilding the older original style tranny. The rebuilds only real benefit is the warranty offered......however costing considerably more at the end of the day. Your money and choice, but the AV6 will undoubtebly outlast the rebuilt tranny down the road.

They wont gain much from a swap like they would with a rebuild.
They cant be really certain on how to do the swap (Lack of Confidence)
They wont warrant a swap
Don't believe a shop! Believe in the good old fellows of the Acurazine Forum.. You DONT want a REBUILD! You WANT a SWAP for AV6!

I'm at ~6k on my fourth tranny. The first oneone was replaced by the original owner @ 60k. I bought it at 66k and I replaced it @ 110k and then again @ 141k. At 147k, my TL is running great!

02 CL-S original replaced at 71K, got 63K on my replacement. It's got issues....

Hmmm, maybe wanna consider dropping in the "AV6" for better luck next time !!!

I just happen to be messing around on craigslist, and in Orlando found a JDM with less than 50k with tranny and ECU for $1500, if i was not moving i would so jump on that and just sell my 99 engine and trans could probably get more for it since tranny was just rebuilt, but man temptation!

When i saw it i wanted to slap myself in the face, cause i would have totally jumped on that instead of doing the rebuild for the 99 and it would have been cheaper and i would have had plenty of options if that tranny broke.
