How far on gas light?
O.k., driving like a normal human being how far can you go once your gas light immediately comes on? I mean in my Civic, it would flash every now and then and then stay on when I started to really push it. But my TLS just comes on and stays on. I know your not to get it that low, but sometimes I get lazy. Like this morning coming to work, I was low but had to spank a friend of mine in his Accord. After that I had 18 minutes to go before being late to work but I really wanted two lemon filled doughnuts from Dunkin Donuts. Then my lights came one, so I decided to fill my morning hunger and go for the doughnuts. Totally paranoid going to work I wondered how far could I go with the light on? Not habitually, just occassionally. Thanks!

I've noticed when the gas light comes on with my 2003 TL-S I have about 4-5 gallons left!
Kinda puts the rest of the Fuel Gauge out of whack since its "bottom loaded" so much.

I have just gotten my Tl-S in the past month so I have never let the gauge get below 1/4 tank. But yesterday the light came on and I filled up and fit 14.5 gallons in the tank. What is the size of the tank? 17? 18?

I think it differs, from car to car. I`ve notice that when my comes on, it still has about 2 Gal. left. I have the habit to top off every time I fill up. ( I know it`s not a good thing to do with this model of car). Any way I never exced 30 miles when it comes on. You really don`t want the hassel of running it out of gas! You can`t just put gas in and crank it up. Normaly you have to take it in to get primed back up.

"but I really wanted two lemon filled doughnuts from Dunkin Donuts."
My favorite is the "glazed stick."
Now that's a good donut.
Don't you hate that weighted down feeling you get after DD?
Anyway, I try to never get below a 1/4 tank.
You never know when you'll get stuck in traffic or something.

I usually fill up as soon as the light comes on. receipt says 13.* gallons, so I'm guessing there's like 3 or 4 left at the time. Not worth getting stranded.
Sidenote: if you ever do get stranded, get the one who has had the most alcohol of the evening and pee in the tank. Something with the alcohol to gas ratio makes the car go again. Of course, do this only with POS cars, not your TLs while hysterically laughing. Yes, you must be laughing. Can someone confirm the science ?

Sorry, but I couldn't resist. I drove about 25 miles with mine on a few days ago. When I filled up I got 14.2 gallons, so.....I'd say you've got quite a bit of gas left when the light comes on.

Bear: Don't top off. My car is in the shop because of it. Apparently I flooded the vapor recovery system in the gas tank. The extra fuel went there since the tank was completely full. Killed the sensors and was causing my engine to die everytime I let off the gas. Engine was flooding and miss firing too. Been in the shop for 11 days now. One part on back order. Just got the car less than 2 months ago.

Yeah, the light comes on fairly early. I had the light on for about 30 miles and still only put 55 litres in the tank (tank is 65 litres total).
There's some room between the point where the guage reads zero and a pin that appears to be below zero. I wonder if the gauge is accurate in that zone.

When the light comes on its around 3 gals still in the tank.
As said you could go around 70 miles with out any problems.
This is generaly on the highway at normal speeds of 65 to 70mph.

I tend to wait on filling up until I am "almost" empty (1-2 gallons left). I have had my S type for about a month and have experimented with the gas gauge. It is one of the most accurate gauges that I have had in a car - half way on the gauge is about half a tank. Nice progressive drop from full to empty.
The light comes on with about 3 gallons left in the tank. I have let the gauge go down to a bit past the midway on the red "empty" line and still had over a gallon left. This gives me an average crusing range of about 400 miles (at approximately 25 mpg) in city/freeway combination driving.

Hey Chet03-TLS, if we can't top up the gas tank, how do we know when we have filled up the tank? It sounds like we should never make the fuel gauge needle reach to the 'F' mark??
#29
once I drove and drove and drove with the light on.
It became a real probem when the needle was near the peg - making turns gas would swoosh around and not go to the engine. Or when accelerating. Engine started cutting out. I barely made it to a gas station.

Hey Guys, can anyone confirm that we cannot top off our gas tank on the TL Type S (according to Chet03-TLS) ?? It just absolutely does not make sense if we cannot fill it up. The whole point, I think, with all the gas pumps is to detect when the gas tank is full and will automatically release the handle to stop the flow of gas into the tank (This is when I stop). It just doesn't make sense that our TL Type S have this problem. This is probably one of the basic design in a car. Unless what Chet03-TLS meant was to force the gas into tank (until it overflows) even when the pump keeps on releasing the pump handle.
Can anyone confirm this? Or comment on this topic?

"Topping off" means that you put more gas in the tank after it has automatically clicked off. Presumably, some folks do this to try and adjust the cost to a round amount. There is nothing "wrong" with the car if it is not supposed to be topped off.
