Post How does the torque-sensitive steering compare to speed-sensitive steering?

Just wondering. Haven't read any posts about it.

The steering weighting is much much better - provides more feel as the assist varies by the force you are trying to overcome - ie. if less force is needed, the assist is less. In the speed sensitive systems, you run into at least two problems I know of that are overcome by the torque sensitive system:
1) when turning the steering fast even at low speed, the system occasionally bogs
2) the feel is lacking depending on road surface because the system is only depending on the speed of the car.

I was hoping the steering on my TL would get much heavier at higher speeds than it is. My '89 CRXsi also had speed sensitive steering and I seem to recall at high speeds it felt more like a non-power steering system. Is that how the torque-sensitive feels?

The steering is heavy. I like it. It is consistent regardless of speed and gives good road feel.

The weight of the wheel when you're up to speed isn't bad, but i'd like it heavier. When you're just creeping through a parking lot I thought that it was over boosted. I would like it if there was a more consistent feel through out.

I don't know if you all are aware -- but on all MSRP stickers -- including mine -- it says "Speed-sensitive steering" NOT torque-sensitive. It's considered the same thing, apparently by Acura. It's the same steering system in the CL Type S. It does exactly what speed-sensitive steering SHOULD do -- keep it somewhat loose at lower .. parking-maneuvering speeds, and then tighten it up after 30 mph or so (maybe and probably sooner than that)

WTF? What the hell is torque-sensitive steering then?

If I were you, I'd call up Acura and ask about that. Miata owners got free service rebates when Mazda misrepresented horsepower ratings. Maybe you TL-S owners can get something from Acura if they misrepresented the torque-sensitive steering.

The components used to produce a torque sensitive steering system cost more than those used in speed sensitive steering. Essentially, torque sensitive steering measures the drivers steering wheel input -and- vehicle speed where speed sensitive steering only adjusts for speed and feels less linear. We're actually getting more with this system not less.
