You kno the rightmost pedal? Its called the gas, u want to push it all the way down Also staying in your lane is a good idea.

seriously what do you need to know? play around with sportshift some and see which you like better. the TL is an auto, so there really arent many "special techniques" to do. some people say brake torquing helps (revving in 1st gear while holding down the brakes).

from my own exprience,
when using the "sportshift", it seems that you don't get as much power as the auto.

you guys feel that too?

People have said that gate-shifting is faster than SS. I usually race with SS when I know the race is a close match. But if I know if I can blow him out of the water than I just leave it on auto. I have yet to try gate-shifting. Maybe I should save that when I race a porsche?!!

2000+ owners gate shift because the car will shift up from 1st to 2nd gear for you in SS. wont make a difference in a 99

What I used to do when I raced was
I put it into 1st brake torqued it
let go of the brake and accell to around 5-6k rpms and shift to second.....but seriously dont streetrace, it aint worth it, a fellow 16 year old was in a porsche was racing and he T-boned me when I was just driving and my car got ****ed up....I got out of the car and beat the **** out of him, broke his nose, and his face, and his arm (later I found out he was the captain of the soccer team<field fairys>). The insurance company said that there were 10,500 worth of damages....and they fixed my TL and its all cool now, but the guy is fileing a law suit for assault and stuff. mabe if I win the case, I'll beat his ass again.....

Going fast is cool in ur TL till **** happens to u and u get a geo loaner.

to street racing...but...if you must.

D5-5th gear is an over drive gear used for the freeway...no good

D4-4th gear is an over drive gear used in the city...no good

D2-You'll start out in 2nd. Used for icy/snowy condition...no good

D1-As a rookie driver, the chances of shifting too early or too late causing you to hit the rev limiter is too high. Drag racing on the strip is one thing...but on the street I seriously think you should use both hands and focus on EVERYTHING else around you. The less worry you have about shifting, the more you can focus on driving.

So....this leaves up to D3.

I personally believe that this is the gate position of choice when street racing. No worries about shifting...plus if you let go of the gas (for whatever reason...emergency menuevers maybe?) you'll get help through engine braking...plus you will always be in the power band in case you need to floor it again.

Now if you want to be logical to the EXTREME...D3 will redline around 105 (you can do the math for the gearing if you want). This will help you avoid getting towed. In, CA...if you get caught going over 100mph, the police can take you away right then and there...and have your car towed. So...for those that ever got a 99mph ticket...you are either VERY lucky or the cop did that on purpose because he was too lazy to haul your ass in.

So....bottom line. Don't race over 100 mpg and dont go past D3 (besides...you'll loose if you do).

I have a 2001 TL/navi.
I do D3, turn off Traction Control and floored it.
The Celica will edge you by a front wheel but loose out at 40 - 50 mph speed band. I like racing with the 4 cylinders when there is a slight uphill ahead. You'll hear them flooring it and their exhaust and engine will roar but they are going nowhere while you speed past them. I also like to tease them by slowing down just a little and let them catch up, then I'll smoke them again.
Good Luck

Shh...I can't show any credentials if asked. :toothless

BTW...how you doing? I'm applying right now as we speak (just decided to take a breather )

But...to stay on topic...yeah D3. I would practice what I preach, but ever since the accident my balls never grew back to their normal size. LOL

Now I just let them go and try to use them as radar bait and clear traffic. :smokin:

I say gate shifting is best, from my limited experience. I do notice more power than using the sportshift. Hell, the tires even squeal between 1st and 2nd using gateshift.

I use D4 when driving around town and D3 if I feel like racing from a stoplight. However, I always leave the traction control ON. If I turn it off, I get massive wheel spin. That's no good!

I have been on the track about 20 times.

SS, gate shifting, D5/D4...all the same when it comes to 1/4 mile time.

A celica GTS beat last night, but not sure if it was stock, but I have a 99 not a 00 (5-speed).

The fastest time I ran has been N(neutral) dumping it on D4(99) before the light turns green. .8 second faster than any other way. I have tried Gate shifting, SS, you named. There are 2 drawbacks to doing this, wheel spinning and not so good for the tranny, but it won't killed either. So don't do it often and have a good set of tires.

I rev it up to around 3k rpms and then dumped on D4, I might try 4k rpms next time, you need practice for this. because it gets a little tricky and Always turn OFF your TCS.

If you have a 00 and up, you should be able to beat a GTS, and any TL beats a celica non GTS.
