horrible gas milage after AEM CAI install

Hey guys,
I just installed a AEM CAI and it seems that my gas milage has down big time. I know its winter, but i live in vancouver so not very cold at all. I dont know what it works out in miles, but i use to get 11 or max 12 litres/100 km.. I am not getting 14 litres/100 km. Any ideas????
I also just did a oil change, transmission fluid change and had my intakes cleaned out. I love the new intake and the sound but i don't know if this is the effect of it.
Any ideas????

Hmmm... this is a fairly common problem. To alleviate it, one must not floor the car on every opportunity. I know how nice a CAI can sound but don't get carried away. Usually, limiting the flooring and VTEC-ing solves this problem. Let us know how it turns out. BTW, I am the proud purchaser of a CAI for myself. I am awaiting arrival of my very own Comptech Icebox.

Thats true don't slam on the pedal - drive normal and you will be straight - only floor it when you need to

You should get better gas mileage because the intake makes it easier for the motor to make power.

Then again, you'll be using more gas if you drive spirited all the time.

Are you throwing any CELs?

Yeah, my mileage has gone down. I'm driving as "conservatively" as possible to see if there's an improvement. While I haven't taken numbers to confirm this, I'm willing to bet I'm getting less than 20 mpg with my city driving. That's pretty lousy for this car.

It really is, considering I can get 33 MPG on the highway consistently if I wanted to. Driving like the cabbies in NYC, I still managed 23/24 MPG city. I'll be sure to post if my gas mileage changes with the addition of the Comptech Icebox, which is going in this week.

I'd take 23, but I don't think it's there.

After the new year I'm going to keep a log for a month or so and see how the car does.

Before my TL-S I had a supercharged Xterra. That thing drank gas like it was going out of style. I feel I'm going to the pump just as much with my Acura.

the last 2 cars i had the milage didnt go down with the aem. and mine hasnt gone down on the tl with my modified intake. i think you might be stepping on it a little moer than usual now to hear the sound. you should notice a drop in milage durring the winter months due to the different formula in gases and if you use the defrost the air is on

check tire pressure. Cold air tends to deflate it a little

Holy sh!t. That's a bit high. You shouldn't be above what the tire states. Drain some of that off. Make sure you're taking readings when the car/tires are cold.

My MPG hasn't changed much, less than 1 MPG decrease.

But think about it. CAI delivers more, cooler air. That is bound to change the air/fuel mixture ratio. It would run leaner, and the ECU would adjust and compensate by adding more fuel. And fuel mileage is bound to be affective by this.

the # on the tire is a max inflation #. the # on the car is a recomended #. i have been running close to 40 all the way around (with the ocasional bup higher on the weekends) for around 131,000 miles now (and no i didnt notice or have "faster"wear. its all a personal prefrence. higher for better traction, and a firmer feel. lower (32psi i wouldn go any lower than that) for a softer quieter ride with less handeling.

the stocks should be at 32psi but aftermarket Z-rated should be around 36-38psi. That is what I was told by my tire guy.
As for your MPG, I noticed a HUGE loss when I installed my intake and headers, but then after I while I realized why. I was so happy with the power increase that I was averaging 90mph and gunning it every chance I get. I've had the installs for about 6 months now and my MPG is now back to normal, around 25mpg city. You may not notice it but you might be driving a little more aggressively after the install.

Ya I think you might be right. I think gunning it now takes more gas than it did before. If I drive hard now i totally notice the gas difference versus before. I drove like a granny and I got about 11L/KM so back to normal.
thanks for the tips.
