Honda Motor said yesterday it would recall 699,000
cars spanning five models,including the popular Accord
sedan,in Canada and the United States,to fix a parking safety mechanism.
The recall applies to certain 1998 and 1999 model
year Accord cars,1999 Odyssey minivans,2002 CR-V
sport utility vehicles,1999 Acura TL cars and Acura CL
cars from the 1997 to 1999 model years.Of the total,
650,000 are in the U.S.
The defect was found in the safety mechanism which
allows the key to be removed from the ignition switch only
when the shift lever is placed in "park." Honda
found that with enough force and tampering of the
key cylinder,the key could be pulled out even when the
transmission is not in "park."

Whoever actually forces the key out while the ignition is not in park is an IDIOT.


On the other hand, that's very good of Honda to issue a recall on that. My POS Dodge Intrepid let me pull out the key even when the transmission was in Drive (never tried it while driving, though :P). Dodge never issued a recall on that and it didn't happen with "enough force". You could just slide it out.

thats how the old school gm's were. Whats the big deal. Who touches the key while driving anyway, let along uses force on it. What Honda should do is recall the trannies.

Yeah I thought "so what" too, but won't that kill our engines (immobilizer) if the key comes out?

What is the issue here?
