The homelink system is a remote itself built into the car. So I dont get what your asking? You want a remote for a remote? I just programmed mine to open my garage the other day... so maybe i can help you if I understand your question. Just let me know what it is that your are actually tryign to do.

Our family uses the garage as our main way of getting in our house. Now we do have two sets of spare keys just incase the garage motor breaks, which has happened about 4x's already since we use the garage so much but what I was trying to say was I find myself not using my car sometimes and instead of punching in the garage code on a keypad, is there a way to have a remote that activates the Homelink system in our cars..or even our garage motor?

So let me see if I got this straight... u basically want to open up your garage door w/o punching the numbers on the key pad and not from the Car's Home Link system. Is that correct? If so.. can you tell me what brand Garage Door Opener you have installed.. and I'll try to help.

In simple... you should be able to purchase another remote that opens the garage door. When I got mine installed... I have a Lift Master.. it came with a wall mountalbe button switch to mount inside the garage to close and open, and also two remotes to clip on to the 2 cars sun visors. Now, as the TL doesnt need this remote, as it has the Home Link.. I had a left over remote. I mounted this remote inside the house by my patio switches.

Cost of remote should be less than 50 bux. I hope this helps and this is what u were asking for.

Go to the place who installed ur guage opener. Or goto ur local Home Depot and get another "remote garage opener", either same brand, or u can get a universal one that works with any brand. They usually go for $15~30.

Here is one from homedepot.com

They also make key chain garage door remotes. I have a Chamberlain and it was one of the options.

Often times if you have a home alarm, the remote key fobs will have an extra button you can use for the garage door.

Any remote can be used for homelink. Some people have it turn on the house lights or turn on the coffee maker, etc.

Setting up the Homelink system was a pain. :o I had the repairman that fixed our garage motor to program the Homelink.

Yes! This is exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I should've said "Keychain" .. and no, I don't want to be carrying around a big-ass garage opener (the one with the visor holder). Where could I find this Chamberlain???

My Homelink works and I do believe I have a liftmaster as well. Most people have these..but different models. Mine is about 6-7 years old..so I'm glad I got it to work. Sorry I can't tell you for I tried several times and finally just gave up. Then when our motor finally got busted..while the repairman was up there, I asked him to program it for you and he did it in like 5 secs. :o

there are 2 different types of opener instructions. most now are the "rolling" code ones. make sure you are trying the correct 1.

I have a garage door with a rolling code so I don't know how to program it into the Homelink. I cannot find the button on the unit which I use to program the Homelink. I think its a Liftmaster.

On your opener itself, there should be a learn button for the Lift Master openers. Now... on mine.. the learn button can be located right by the bulb on the opener(motor). I had to pop the plastic cover off by pushing some tabs in and then i saw this big red button. Just push that button once for a second and the blinking LED light right next to it should be lit up solidly. Then go back into the car and hold the home link button down until you see the light bulb on ur garage opener(motor) blink on and off. Once you press the learn button on the motor you have 30 seconds to go to the car and hit the homelink button. This would complete the setup for those of us like myself who have the rolling code.

Now obviously this should be done only after you followed the steps in your manual of clearing the codes in the homelink and holding one of the garage openers remote up to the home link.

Come on guys I know you can do this!! Haha! Hope this helps will be glad to help more if needed. I would take pictures, but my sister has my digi cam in FL and won't get back till Saturday night.

you need to have the set up in the house designed for homelink.

I have Homelink in my TL, and no garage, however I have some x10 units in the house. I attempted to have the homelink unit "learn" the code that turns on some lights in the house by holding down both the transmitter and homelink button, and waiting for the blinking indication that it was "learned". This did not work for me. Has anyone else had more luck in doing something like this. I am going to keep trying...
