Home Link Problem

Home Link Problem
I recently purchased my 2001 TL, and I am having trouble with the Home Link transmitter. I have followed the directions in the manual (several times), but the transmitter will not "learn" the code. I do have an opener with the rolling codes, but I have been following those directions.
Does anyone have any advice on getting this thing working?
Is it possible that the transmitter is not working? If so, how would I know that this is the problem?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Don't feel bad because I have a 99 TL and I still can't use the home link transmitter.
I tried every possible code and followed the directions but it still doesn't work. So if anybody have a sure proof way of making it work, let me know too.

I found out (through many trial and errors) that you have to do what the manual says to clear out old codes prior to trying to set it, even on a new car. And that's what threw me. I figured you wouldn't need to clear it on a new car.

I remember hitting a button on my Genie to switch to learning mode. The unit will then blink telling you is was successful when complete.

Check the manual.

I know I didn't get it the first time around because I didn't realize that you have to follow the directions for a regular opener FIRST, then do the rolling-code thing.
My roommate clued me in to that bit while he was programming the HomeLink in his new minivan.

Thanks for all the ideas, but I've tried all the suggestions that have been brought up so far. I have put the opener in "learning" mode, I have started from the beginning of the instructions, I have cleared all the old codes out, but it still won't work. Anyone else have anything? I really would like to use this feature, but I am sick of trying to get it to work.

I agree with VDo this is the exact thing that I did.
I don't have a garage at my house but I park in my the back yard behind my 7foot tall fence. My sisters new house has the 2 garage doors. My mother & I gave her the 2 Craftsman garage door openers & a dishwasher for gifts for her new house. I am at her house at least 3 times a month so I use my Home Link sytem then. The first time I tried to program the thing it had me. I tried again the next day & it took me 10 mins for one & about 3 for the other. Someone had said that you have to erase the codes from the car even if its the 1st time you use it. I found this to be true this is what I did the second day when I got it to work.

Don't get me started! I finally got the Homelink device to open the Canadian version of the Stanley garage-door opener (Canadian version not only has the rolling-code feature, a remote-control only transmits for about 2 seconds for each button press).
I tried so many things i can't remember precisely what worked and what didn't ... and when it did work it was unexpected.
I'll assume you've done the same and know all the steps to program a Homelink button, how to turn on your garage-opener's learn button, and have it learn your newly-programmed Homelink button. Here are a few things I learned:
1) The Homelink device doesn't learn anything if the car's ignition is off. (It didn't for me).
2) Clear the Homelink device of all programming before trying to program any of its buttons.
3) I couldn't program the first HomeLink button (driver's side). Zip. Zero. Nothing. I was able to program the THIRD button (passenger side) ... go figure.
4) Try all of the remote-control's buttons. Mine has two programmed buttons 'open door' and 'open light'. The Homelink refused to learn the 'open door' button. However, it did learn the 'open light' button! Only it not only turns on the light, it also opens the garage-door!?! Not what I expected but I refuse to argue with success!
It really shouldn't be this cryptic and confusing ... maybe it works better with other brands of openers.
