Lightbulb HID kit (aftermarket)

i've seen pieces of the info i'm looking for here and there, but i figured i'll just come out and ask the question.

first off, i'm tired of going through used ballasts, this will be my 3rd passenger side ballast. the scrap yard parts are no guarantee and these cars arnt getting any younger. plus i'm getting tired of replacing parts every other year!

can i just replace the oem setup with an aftermarket one? are they plug and play? is it replacement ballast and igniters? am i going to have to cut wires and drill in the back of my headlight? any advice from people who have already done this?

thanks in advance

you are very knowledgeable on this subject!
so correct me if i'm wrong but there is a ballast that goes between, lets say the "battery", and the igniter. and there is the igniter that sits on the back of the headlight housing, is in between the ballast and the bulb.
what would this kit replace?
would i cut the wires to the oem ballast and just run the kit from "battery" to light bulb?
