pop the black plastic surrounding the metal shiftgate first.

as for the metal shiftgate itself. it's tricky. what i do is push it horizontally towards the passenger side as hard as i can then lift it up from the right side. it'll probably take a lot of back and forth nudging though

I have the same problem. I just bought a bulb from the dealer. However, I found that the shift knob is very tight. How do you unscrew the shift knob?. Another member told me the shift knob need to be out.

You have to remove the clear piece that spreads the light out. then take a needle nose plires and pull it out

yeah, un screw it. just turn it real real real hard to the left. it'll probably be set on here but turn it it's meant to come off. then you have to remove the silver shift gate too

I had just worked on the light and also taken a video of how it is like. The plastic pieces are loose already. I just want to show how they come off. Hope it will help. Here is the link.

Just a quick update. I got a replacement bulb from radio shack today and with a little tweaking I got it working. Thanks to everyone posting their tips.
