Question Help Needed Immediately !! K&N Filter

I am trying to install a K & N dropin filter and i can't seem to get the seal right. How can I tell if I have the stupid thing upside down? I'm usually pretty handy at this kind of thing, but I want to make sure that I have a good seal. Which end is up????

Can anyone help?

OWWW....!!! I feel you!!! When i installed mine, i couldn't get the top on correctly, it was still open a bit...i tried to put in to for 1/2 hr..then i said f*ck it. I drove home from work that day and then i messed with it for another 1/2 hr. But if you read the instruction carefully, it tells you that you might have trouble installing it, and if you do put some grease on the lid and the filter.. IT WORKS!!!

The place where the lid doesn't seal is the upper tab (the one closer to the back end of the car) Put some grease on the bottom side of the lid and the filter on that side of the lid...and it will go in with less force then when you were trying before.

It's not that hard to tell which way it goes...on one side of the filter...there are 2 semi-circles...this is where the screw goes..

There weren't any semi-circles on my filter. I think I got it in right, but I'm still not sure if it is upside down. There is a flat side and a side that has "steps" I ended up putting the flat side facing down.

The flat side faces up, the idea is that you want as much surface area where the air hits the filter, hence the pleated side towards the bottom.

The cover is tough to get back on and it does make a growl if it is not hooked back on correctly, the rear clip is the cuprit as someone else posted. Prepare to ***** a lot in you're effort to get it sealed correctly, but once done it is good for a long time

so...shouldn't the steped side be facing up? steped side has larger surface area than the flat side...

Maybe I looked at this wrong, Does not the fresh unfiltered air come from the front of the car ? and the filtered air go through the flexible tube above the filter housing directly into the engine ? If it does then the pleated sides should face downward which would be that the unfiltered air flows from below the air box to the top of the airbox.

hmmm. Well i managed to fit it in either way. The air does get sucked up from the bottom. I have the flat side up now.
