Heating Problem

This morning, I noticed that after a few minute (<5min) of driving, my temperature guage was almost half way up. I was at a stoplight at the same time and noticed my exhaust gas. Note that the temperature outside was almost 55 and that the car was only on for about 5 minute.

I stopped by a gas station and filled up the coolant reservoir. It was like 3/4 way down. When I started up again, the temp guage marker remained the same (near) halfway mark.

What's going on? What should I do? Should I take it to the dealership?

According to the Owner's Manual, the normal position of the Temp needle (after complete warm up) is half way between C and H. I don't see where you have a problem.

Really? Why does it get so hot? I've always thought that the engine temperature shouldn't ever get near the halfway point unless you were in traffic, in idle and what not. I've never noticed it being that high though after less than 5 minute of driving (from starting) ...

Because that's the normal operating temp for the engine.

According to the Owner's Manual that's not true. Half way up the gauge is normal.

Except in winter (when it takes a little longer), the temp gauge in my '99 is at half way between C and H within 5 minutes of start up.

Every other car I drove didn't run that hot though. Oh well

Good thing I didn't call the dealership and make an appointment, or else I'd be

Ohkay, so I shouldn't worry about it then.
