Has anyone attempted Transmission Rebuild ?

Just curious has anyone attempted to rebuild the 5 SP automatic Acura transmission ? I rebuild a turbo 350 chevy approximately 20 years ago. Challenging but not impossible. I see there are kits available for the Acura. Is the valve body available, and torque converter ?

According to the Acura e-store parts are readily available, including the valve body and torque converter. Usually the torque converter would be rebuilt. They charge around $300 in the SF bay area. I would think if you had the updated case it should be possible to rebuild one.

You have to get crafty with making a few tools unless you buy them but its not impossible. Especially with a manual to guide you. I dont know if you have ever opened up a manual trans but this auto is similar inside being a 3 shaft design.

This is something not for the "faint of heart". I've never rebuilt an auto-trans, but I have done a "ring and bearing" job, which is something I would not do again.

The unfortunate thing is you need to remove the unit, rebuild it and then re-install it, hoping that the rebuild was successful. If it goes "crunch", you then have to start all over again.

Very frustrating indeed !

Given the very professional way rebuilders work today, I would be hard pressed not to use them.

No…don’t do this repair yourself. A transmission rebuild should be handled by a skilled transmission mechanic. I know of a few… if you are in Charlotte NC go to Twin Transmission Repair (http://www.twincharlotte.com). A transmission rebuild requires a lot of time and work. And the transmission has to be removed from the

Yeah, everybody and their uncle wants to know if this screen is accessible from the outside of the tranny's case ?
The suspense of not knowing is killing us and our tranny's.

It is from the clutches. It doesnt take a whole lot of material off of each of the 27 or so clutches to clog solenoid screens like that. Also when the screens look like that the more wear there is on the clutches. Its a big cycle that just gets worse.

(its been a long time but) Those look like they are the shift solenoids/screens we tell people to pull off and clean/replace when they change their fluid. Its the best method to helping to prolong the trans.

Seeing you are in there (and say the clutches had/have plenty of meat on them) you are replacing them and the steels right? Did you take any pics of the 3rd gear clutches or mic them for their wear/thickness?

i bought the 99 tl for 700$ so i went ahead and got a junkyard trans for 700 and to my luck it was a rebuild transmission , but 6 months later i ended up selling the car for 3500 ( needed cash )
the car only had 125k original this transmission was rebuild at one point on time, the case had permatex so someone wa in this trans before .
the symptoms that the strans had was it was slipping out of gear , i would not shift sometime , iam planing on replacing just the clutch pack not the steel plates and also a good clean up of the valve body servo, pump
i will be taking pictures tomorrow , but u might be right all the clutches/plates in 1st 2 and 4 are the same color but the 3rd clutch pack has some purple color and also the plates on that pack have heat marks specially on the 3rd one from the piston up i will be showing pics tomorrow , i never realized how easy are this trans to rebuild , you just need to take ur time and have some sort of discipline and organization

Can you please show me the kit you bought to rebuild your trans with? Did you buy the whole kit or just certain parts? I saw that rock auto had a rebuild kit, but I'm not sure what I need, all or 1 or 2. Can anybody help me out with this? I need to rebuild mine too.

auto trans is similar to standard inside? like how? and where? cause when i was in school and we were rebuilding transmissions, and this is a A.S.E. certified school, auto and standard are more diff then night and day.....design wise? but there are way more components in an auto trans....

I would definitely replace all the 3rd gear steels and clutches. They have been seeing high heat and slipping.

Im not saying they are exactly the same, Im talking about it being a 3 shaft design, that is very similar to the 6 speed manual in layout. Many autos are/were 2 shaft (especially when this car came out) But if you compare the inside/ shaft layout of this to the 6 speed they are very very similar minus drums/clutchpacks vs the shift fork/syncro

I want to resurrect this thread to add that I did discovered what and how to fix the burnt clutches inside 3rd gear for the 5 speed and also how to do the same for 2nd gear in the 4 speed auto trans. My rebuild was with the 2002 Odyssey, but our transmissions are almost identical as yours. In fact member Odyfamily clued me into the fixes because he was informed by somebody on acurazine about the NTHSA report with the 3.2 Acura TL. here is why 3rd clutches fail and how to fix it: https://www.odyclub.com/forums/24-19...nsmission.html
