Hand positioning on steering wheel?

Do you use the 10 o'clock 2 o'clock method?

Left hand on 10 and right hand is either on shift knob or if my gf on my pessenger seat then my hand would be over there(some time on the highway with so little car on the road i will hold her hand while driving).

Totally agree!
Only big difference is that my LEFT hand is holding my girlfriend's hand as my Saber has the steering on the right.

9 and 3

edmtls,

i went to the bmw driver training school (abridged version) and they said the 10 - 2 method is about 40 years out of date. the steering wheel was much larger then and with the advent of smaller wheels (and biometrics studies), you have much more control of the vehicle when your hands are at 9 and 3 o'clock. (ie to do an emergency manoeuvre, you can turn the wheel 180 degrees either direction without taking your hands off the wheel when the hands are positioned at 9-3)

HA. i'm doing the same thing too now~ i'm in Hong Kong having my fun summer break, and driving my uncle EVOV around. and i aready stall that like ten time at light. and in the city the fast speend i can go is like 20-40km/h. what a waste of those 280 hp and 2.0Turbo. the fastest i have gone in the EVO is like 80km/h.

i always keep my left hand on the 10 o'clock position, and unless my girl is in the passenger seat, i like to keep my right hand on the **** knob, i think it's just a stick habit? :p

You guys use hands to steer?? Geez.... J/K....

Actually both 10-2 and 9-3 positions are correct.... my hands are all over the steering wheel actually... but most of the time, it's one hand at 10 or 9, the other on shift knob OR holding GF's hand...

Believe it or not, NHTSA (the feds) was toying with the idea of pushing 8 and 4 as the "new" correct placement for hands on the wheel. The reasoning behind this was to remove drivers' hands and arms from the trajectory path of a deploying airbag (this position would keep arms/hands below the area and allegedly would prevent injuries). The idea is to drive with both hands and as you make a turn, you would release the hand on the same side as the turn and guide the wheel as the other hand actually turned the wheel. For example, when making a right turn, you would release your right hand grip at the 4:00 position and let the wheel slide through it as your left hand (at 8:00) turns the wheel to the right. It works pretty good as long as you get used to releasing one hand during turns.

I don't believe this "recommendation" was ever put into practice though.....

This may be a little off topic, but what I hate to see is when people are making a slow speed turn , say right, and they get an underhand grip with their left hand (when turning right) at 12 o'clock to turn the steering wheel. This cannot be safe. If they had to make an emergency maneuver, no can do. Or, if someone hit them in the front (maybe because they could do an emergency maneuver) their hand is right where that airbag is exploding out of. Bye, bye arm. That's a pet peeve.
As for me, I usually have my left hand at 9, and right hand on the gear shifter to shift through the brackets (no matter what you guys say, I'm willing to bet money that way is faster than SS), or on the arm rest. Or, right hand at 3, and left arm resting on the window, getting a funny tan line.
