Question Green light in armrest?

Can anyone tell me why there is a green light in the arm rest? I noticed that it's not on when the headlights are off, so I am sure it's to help see inside the armrest while looking for something, assuming it's dark out. But is there a way to shut it off when not looking for something in the armrest, while the headlights are on?
