Got my feelings hurt last night................
Was heading home from dinner with the wife, and a Black Mustang pulled up next to me at a red light. Not even thinking, I left it in D5 and when the light turned green..............I lost traction and the pony squatted and immediately jumped out about 2 cars lengths. After the TL hooked up I pretty much stayed with him and got a good look at his rear bumper. It said COBRA! Yikes!
But I do feel I could've made a better showing without the tire spin...........

Unless you have some serious work under the hood of your car, or maybe got an 85 shot of nitrous, you're probably not going to keep up with a Cobra AT ALL (unless he's not trying). The new 2003 Cobras get 390hp and 390 ft-lbs!!! While the 1999-2001 Cobras get 320hp and 317 ft-lbs.
If you would have kept up with him assuming you got traction, then he probably wasn't trying...
Mustang GTs we can usually keep up with - these are probably the closest races, while the V6 Mustangs usually get trashed by our cars.
If you managed to keep 1 car length away from a Cobra or so, don't feel embarassed, thats really respectable (although my contention is still that he probably wasn't trying).
Unless of course, its some guy with a GT that put a Cobra bumper on or something lame like that.
Oh, I suppose if it was an older Mustang Cobra (1993 maybe), they only have 235hp and 280ft-lbs, so its very possible for you to keep up with one of those. And 1994-1995 gets 240/285...
I just always think of the Cobras as getting 300+ hp to the crank with gobs of torque to go with it.

The wife was really f**king with me, saying that was the first car to ever beat her away from that red light (it narrows to 1 lane shortly thereafter). I personally thought it was funny as hell, and that my little TL/S showed itself well. If the front tires hadn't of gone up, he may have had to take the whip to his little pony!

Haha yea you guys aren't gonna like this - my dad and I took a test drive in an 03 Cobra, and nearly bought one, except the sales guy tried to rip us off over $10,000. So, the same day we went down to Crown Acura in Clearwater and got a really good deal leasing a TL-S.
No chance for beating an 03 Cobra though - the sales guy challengen my dad to floor it, so he gave it about 80% throttle. When the supercharger boost got to 8psi at nearly 6000 RPM's, it sounded like a spaceship, and, o yea, gave about as much thrust as one too. I was strapped to the back of my seat. It will be nice in, say 20 years or so when the Tl has that much power.

I've always wondered about TL-S vs. GT.
If it's a stick coupe, and with equal drivers, TL-S will probably lose. Auto coupe, close. Stick vert, closer. Auto vert, I think TL-S will rape it.

Bah. I hope most of us are grounded in reality. Cobra vs TL-S is a complete "no contest". We are talking about 2 entirely different categories of cars. Trust me, I have much respect for our rides, but there is just no chance against some of the higher end sports cars.
I'm just happy I have a reliable front wheel drive sedan that can haul some respectable a$$. And while I am at, I happen to think the TL in general is a classy looking automobile. I think we own mustangs in that realm

Cobra SVT? hell no... 0-60 in 4.7seconds... even if the guy didnt drop his clutch he cud torch the TL-S which wud be brake torquing.

You know, if you raced a Cobra at every light from Georgia to Cali you'd win! He'd have to fill up too often, he'd surely get a ticket in that cop magnet by Alabama, his tires would be bald by Texas and this engine/axel would be toast by Nevada. Maybe we need an experiment!

ahhhhhh... the legendary cobra. On the plus side, I had the opportunity to leave a stock convertible GT (2k-2k2, the 4.6 liter engine?) a good carlength and a half behind this a.m. punching in 3rd at 85 mph from fourth... not a "race" but i know he was trying to keep up...

my bad... 12.9 stock... hit the wrong key... thats pretty pretty fast... i wudnt wanna mess with that ... TL's sprayin cud probably pull times slightly better but with a few mods, that stang wud kick ass

It was not a newer COBRA. Although I am no expert of FORD products (nor do I care to be), I would guess maybe a 2000/2001. He got me off the line, but once again, I was seriously not impressed. I couldn't believe my TL/S spun like it did! Maybe I do need some new tires (Mich MXV4's with 25,000 on them). Any suggestions?

There was no Cobra for 2000. The exhaust system was defective and 4000+ Cobras were recalled, and production was halted for 2000. The Cobra R came into play for that year, however.
At 320hp, it was still underrated to play with LS1 F-body. Camaro Z28 could be had for 24 grand (putting down 290+ rwhp stock), whereas the Cobra was well over 30 grand. Still, Mustang enthusiasts (read morons ) still bought them. Oh, well. To each his own.
I believe 99/01/02 Cobras ran high 13's in the 1/4-mile in stock form. So, it's fast, but not THAT fast, considering Z28/SS/Formula/T****S6/'Hawk run low 13's stock for less or about the same money.
I worship the F-body, so my opinion could be slightly biased.

My buddy bought a '03 Cobra, finally retired his '88 LX 5.0. This car is truly sick. 17 x 9.5" wheels with huge rubber on them, and he had to feather the throttle to get it to hook up when he was doing a pass to show off it's power. The roots blower comes on instantly when you tromp on it at seemingly any rpm and makes boost right away. The low end grunt of this car was unreal, and as RPM's rose the pull just got harder. I used to drive a '90 LX with a Vortech Supercharger, and this Cobra could eat it alive, stock.
If you want best 1/4mile times for the money, can't beat the new Cobra. It's what kept the Mustang selling all these years... to think that the TL-S has a chance against this car in the quarter is a joke... a Z06 Vette will give it a run, at twice the money though.

True, it can't handle, stop, look as good, or carry the status of a Z06. But you won't care about any of that when you get pumped by a Cobra... you'll be instantly bolting **** on that car to get it to go faster!!

I was talking about the MSRP. The actual prices, as we all know, are set by the dealerships.
Ford dealerships, the same ones who charged upwards of 40 grand for the new T-bird, are general charging somewhere around 3,000-5,000 on top of the MSRP. Yes, there are some dealerships out there who have a lot of allotment for Cobras, and they will sell for sticker, or if you're lucky, below MSRP. But most dealerships are charging way over MSRP. So a 2003 Cobra coupe is going for about 37 grand, and vert for 40,000.
If I were in the market, I would definitely shell out the extra 10 grand for a Z06, since with all the incentives, a new Z06 can be had for less than 47 grand now.
