Got my car lowered.....Custom Coilovers

Yesterday, I got my car lowered with a custom set of coilovers. My installer built a set using springs KONI adjustable yellows. Our first try has 450 lb/in in the front and 350 lb/in in the rear. We're thinking the rear is just a bit stiffer than what we want, so we'll put a set of 300 lb/in springs in the rear in a couple of days. Also, we've got the rear at it's lowest ride height setting and it's still a bit too high, so we'll also try a slightly shorter spring there too.

So far, ride quality is almost perfect. As I said, rear feels just a bit too harsh, but it's close. I'm sure the slightly softer spring will help that. Ride height is pretty good too. I've got about a 1.5-2.0 inch drop, and I've still got a lot of room for wheel travel. I think the car started out pretty high in the first place. We'll further tweak ride height and firmness in the next few days.

Some of you might say why didn't I just got with the Apex'i set, or some other currently available set. Well, I thought long and hard about it, but what I like about doing it this way is that if I feel spring rate is just a bit off for my own PERSONAL preference, we can change it at no additional cost. I don't plan on racing the car, but I do plan on "spirited" driving. I couldn't be sure that whatever brand I bought would be exactly what I was looking for when it came to ride quality. Additionally, the place I'm getting all this stuff is a local establishment that is heavy into autocrossing and racetrack driving, so they're very knowledgeable in suspension work. And I've known the owner for twenty years and have visited his store all that time.

All in all, I'm very happy. I'm almost completely satisfied, and with tweaking in the next few days, I'm sure I'll be completely happy. Plus, my wife thinks the ride is still good. PHEW!

(I'll get pics in a few days when we get the ride height just right.)

Glad you are happy with them. I'm expecting my Zeal B2's to come in soon. The reason I bought those is because I could keep the luxury ride feel while being able to change the stiffness as desired.

At least, that's what I hope it will be like. Doing what you did is probably the best route overall, basically I'll just be crossing my fingers and hoping for a smooth ride.

Congratulations....sometimes suspension can be frustrating getting it right like you want it!

Good luck with your custom coilovers. I have the Apexi and believe it or not, the ride quality is pretty close to stock (even with a 3" drop).

Okay, it's a few days later and we changed out the back. We switched from a 350 lb/in spring to a 300 lb/in spring. In addition, we had the rears set at it's lowest setting, and it still sat a bit too high, so we put in a slightly shorter spring. As it is now, ride is slightly firmer than stock, I'm not rubbing with rear passengers (wheels are 18x8, +45mm), and the rear sits at just about the right height to my satisfaction. I'm thinking I might lower the front maybe a quarter inch.

Actually few guys can read the Japanese instructions which come with the A'pexi coilovers but they have a whole list of replacement springs available for changing spring rates on the WS coilovers. I straight love mine. Plus they are cheap. Thanks TIM!!!

What's cool with the route I did is that it didn't cost extra to try different springs. He just took 'em out and tried a different set, no extra charge!!

Yeah, they're Z2s. There was another member (maybe the same one you mentioned) who had them last year and I liked the way they looked. I asked him for info on them and then I got a set for myself. The Z2s replaced a set of Blitz Type03s that I ended up putting on my SC400.

socal28,

Hey there!! How's the S2K been doing? Enjoying the great weather with it?

I thought the TL was your wife car though???
No, I took over on the TL. I passed my GS-R on to my brother, and picked up a very low mile (~25K) 1992 SC400. She takes the Odyssey when bussing around the kids, and then rolls with the Lexus when it's just her. I'll drive the TL when the situation prevents me from driving the NSX.

I read you put a nice (& pricey?) coilover setup for your S2K. How is it? Any other mods for the car?
