gas mileage sucks, help!

hey guys/gals,

recently my gas mileage has been terrible. i used to could go about avg 260 before the gas light came on and now im barely hitting 230 and the light comes on. Friends of mine told me it could be either the way im driving or maybe because my air filter hasnt been changed? the gas mileage keeps dropping. any ideas on what it could be and how can i resolve this? thanks people for your input

Stop and go driving really kills mpg. Our cars weight almost 4000lbs. Oink, oink.

Sounds like someone just found the wonderful invention called VTEC on his car . Try modding your car, headers and intake and keep off the gas and you'll get much better gas mileage.

Here's what ya do (I think this is how Acura calculates it)

1) Fill the car with EXACTLY 1 gallon of gas.

2) Start the car an let idle.

3) Drop the car off of a 30 mile drop (may need plane/spacecraft)

4) Figure our when the car runs out of gas. (should be 29 miles down).

Other than that, the closest I have come the the 29mpg mark is 26mpg. (and yes I do admin that I "like" VTEC). Not to say that it cannot be done, but it takes some extreme restraint (that I just don't have) to go an entire tank full of gas without going WOT here and there.

i have the same problem but i know what it is now....or atleast for me.....i used to try to keep the rpms around 2-3 but i found the mileage really imporves if you keep her in 3-4 range. i Drive conservatively on highways and was still getting 20 mpg but when i leave her in 4th when im doing light acceleration i seem to get much better mileage......try that.

hey pat,
i'm having the same problem with gas mileage as you are. i think it's the insane heat here in houston. my a/c is running full blast most of the time. that really hurts fuel efficiency.
peter.
ps. i recently took out my resonator, but not sure if that would noticably affect gas mileage
pps. got my heidfelds and nitto's!

hey

sup peter

how much u get the rims for? arent the tires a bit small for them though? i read the post..just drop your car all around. it'll look better. anyways im thinking maybe i need to change the air filter because something might be clogged? how often are u suppose to change the air filter. and yea i agree with you it might be the heat plus im always in stop and go traffic. im taking it to acura next mo. and getting everything checked out

Did the gas companies recently add anything to the fuel. In California gas companies started adding something called MTBE a few years ago which was supposed to clean up the air. Many people reported lower gas mileage after using gas with the added ingredient. Of course the air quaility managament did not talk to water quality people and the additive ended up in the water systems throughout the state.

when i first got my car i always complain that a full tank cost bout 23-24 dollars and i would get most 280 miles on the full tank. now it just somehow climb to 300 then now im getting like 320 miles . . hmm i used to speed alot and go bout 80+ and race all the time now im layed back and drive slower and barely ever race since my speeding tickets. i guess the way u drive does affect how ur gas mileage works out.

you should really try changing your air filter, that should help.
i got the 5zigen heidfelds 17x7.5 for $725 shipped. tires were $430 mounted and balanced. those were the best tires i could find for that price (poor student ). i think they're a little bit small also, so i'll probably switch to 225/45's whenever these wear out.

i'm thinking of lowering the front with h&r oe springs to reduce the wheel gap. i know it won't look as good as an all around drop, but my sister sometimes needs to drive my car and she might damage the kit.

peter.

415 in my 99TL. On average, I get 27-29 MPG. Amazing considering the performance and size/weight of the car...
