Gas Mileage on my TL-S

ok boys. I'm kinda worried about my car. I went on the TO cruise today where about 70 km of it was on a pure highway (45 Miles) and the rest was in foresty areas, probably an average speed of about 55 km/h (35 MPH). I was able to go about 225 km (140 Miles) on half a tank of gas. Keep in mind this is only about 30% highway driving, and 70% city driving. Is that bad gas mileage? A friend of mine in his 99TL was able to do the same distance on about 5-6/8 of a tank. So he basically was between 5/8 and 3/4 of a tank.

Is there something wrong with my car?

Seems about right. I get about 150 miles when my gauge says half tank. Thats mixed highway and stop-and-go driving in a 2000 TL-P.

Keep in mind that specs will say the TL has a 17.something gallon tank, when the gauge only measures about 13.7 gallons from "topped-off" to when the "Oh-**** Light" comes on. So figure mileage accordingly.

Plus your car is new. I'd give it awhile to settle in.

Deity has it correct. You car will take a fair amount of time (give it 2k-2500 miles) before the gas mileage settles. I documented on this board the difference between new and 2500 miles or so, and pre-and post- K&N filter. My mileage increased from around 20 to around 23 on average. My commute is 60% freeway, 40% city streets.

I'll find the pertinent posts and stick them here when I get a chance.

You can't judge gas mileage by how far the gauge drops. Gauge calibration can be (and usually is) different from car to car.

Have you actually calculated the mileage?

Try this- fill it up. Reset the trip odo, and then drive. Next time, fill up again, and divide the miles on the trip odo by the gallons filled. Do this for several tanks, and you'll get a good idea of your mileage.

not every tank of gas is going to be the same. different driving conditions and styles play a huge factor in it. weather will also have a factor in it. just keep track of it for the next few tanks and see. you cant judge from one tank

easiest way

it's a PIA but - I fill it up and then when I get close to 100 miles, fill it up again and use the gallons to calculate the milage - three or four times should give you a good estimate -

mine with 2200 miles right now averages about 23 MPG - between city and highway city 60% hwy 40% - if I am all city ~19MPG and on long trips I get close to 30 MPG.

I do about 70% city/30% hwy. Get anywhere from 18-21 with that. Best to date was like 25 mpg.

You have to get used to the fact that the car sucks gas big time in the city and gives good mileage when used on the highway. Whether you end up half a tank or more than that had nothing to do with mileage since fuel expands inside the tank at different temps. Also, your driving habits affects your consumption. 225 kms on half a tank is not bad. I also fill up at half a tank and I vary from 220 to 255 kms depending again on where I drive and the driving style.

Okay well here's the latest. Yestertday I filled up my tank at about 300 km on the tripometer and it took 35.9 litres of gas. That was filling it right to the top.

so I did the math and here's how it looks.

I did about 187 Miles on 8.975 gallons of gas. which means I got 20.83 miles to the gallon. So if you round up, that's 21 miles/gallon and that's with 30% highway and the rest city driving. Not to mention I gunned it a few times off the line, which I know sucks gas like crazy.

BTW guys one more thing, do you guys find that your gas needle moves quite a bit? Sometimes it's very pesimistic but other times it's optimistic. Sometimes when I turn on the car after filling the tank, the needle goes to like 1 notch below the F mark. I was like WTF is that. So I turn off the car, and turn it back on, and all of the sudden the needle is back to above the F mark. And sometimes when I floor it, I can literally see the gas needle move. I usually use the 1/2 mark as a reference point, and the needle moves pretty quickly when you gunn it a lot.

anyone else ecperiencing this too?

are you referring to me being absolutely nuts? Yah maybe decaf coffee would work a little better. Whatever though, I notice things as soon as they happen with my car, and will let the dealer look at it to prevent anything worse from happening. I won't take my car to the dealer for this, because I doubt it's a problem, it's just an inconvenience.

Yeah, I'd say a little decaf is in order

Actually, I've noticed that this website is getting really slow lately. I'm thinking it might buckle under the sheer volume of your postings...

that might be the problem!!! trust me though, I'm having speed issues with this site too, and frequently have problems loading the pages. Therefore it can't be caused by my obscene number of posts!!! someone else must be hogging all the bandwidth.

Well check out my posts per day, it's not that high.

Not that high? 556 posts in approx. 5 months comes to just under 4 per day. In any event, I think fsttyms1 has everyone beat hands down...

new to the Forum (an 03 owner for a 1.5 years) went from Houston to Kansas - approx. 740 miles - the first tank ful (13 gallons) my wife and I went nearly 320 miles at 65-75 miles and hour. that was in July. regular oil changes and good gas.

and that damn low fuel light - you still have another 30+ miles in it.

now, if you like to shift your own, you can almost watch your gauge head south.

On my 03 TLS, I get 27-28mpg cruising at 75-80 with bursts to 100mph and gearing down to blast through gaps around the left-lane-cruise-control asholls. I suppose 60mph driving would yield in the low 30mpg range.

On the other hand, I am lucky if I get 14mpg in pure city driving.

Point is, gas consumption is far too variable to casually compare numbers.

— — — — — -

BTW — This is the first car that I have had whose gas gauge starts to drop right after fill-up. Most cars gauges stay at FULL until the first few gallons are used. The Acura/Honda gauge can create the illusion of higher gas consumption.
