Gas Mileage in a 99

So ive had my 99 TL for awhile now, and I am loving it. . .except for one thing. I am getting about 17.5 miles to the gallon. I am using exxon 93 octance, and 50/50 on the city hway thing. THIS IS POTHETIC??? (whats even more pothetic is that im not really sure how to spell pothetic)

Tires are filled properly. . .and i dont drive 100mph. . .im prettt easy on the car, rarely take it over 5,000 rpm even. . .

what can i do to get better mileage?

Im gonna probably get a K&N air filter this weekend, but besides that what can I do?

what kind of mileage are other ppl getting?

For me... I fuel the car a weekly basis... If im lucky, i get like 350 KM/Tank... thats like 210 Miles/Tank... I 100% city drive, i have 03 TL-S. I have K&N filter, I give full tank of 94 octane from sunoco every week.

Try using STP fuel injector cleaner. If you have aftermarket rims, keep in mind that wider rims mean more gas.

The car is 100% stock as of now, and the air is on 100% of the time, i know that makes a diff but 17 mpg is crazy

If I calculated my gas mileage correctly, i get 13 mpg. I never go over 3000RPM... Sometimes maybe once a month, i go crazy and floor the car but... im an easy driver. I think it is the fact that im 100% city driving and i have a big hill to climb up and down... Hows your road environment? do they have many hills? cuz that may effect your gasmileage also.

well VTEC kicks in around 4000 RPMS so, driving above that any kills gas mileage. I also have a '99 and with about 75% city I still get 20-22 MPG. But I always keep it below VTEC unless I dont feel like it.

i have a 2001 and my gas milage is horrible, i fill up almost 3 times a week, i'd say 5 times every 2 weeks... and it's alwasy either shell or exxon 93 octane... its' killing my wallet.... i tried filling up a tank and driving on it till the gas light went on, and i got like 245 miles and that's with driving around 17 miles with the light on, i didn't have the balls to go longer, in fear of having to puch the car...

I don't know what some of you guys are doing to get such horrible gas mileage, but only one can wonder. I get pretty good gas mileage in town (+20). On the highway, I get much better, atleast +28 mpg. My in-town mileage includes my constant stomping on the gas (when I feel like it, which is all too often, love the VTEC!).

Oh, and by the way it's spelled PATHETIC!

Grammar is never overrated!!!

Holy crap! What the hell is wrong with your cars?...I can get 400 KM from a HALF TANK of gas from my 99 TL!
Your cars need a tune. I've been doing oil changes at 4000-5000 KM...no less no later...keep the air filter clean, etc. I use 91 Octane ESSO...always..never use Petro Canada or Shell....I once used Sunoco 94...that gas was went quick...i say go down in octane to 91.

With A/C on 100% of the time you are using more gas.
The car should get better gas mileage then you are getting now in its stock form.
I also run my A/C about 100% of the time & have done so in the 4yrs I have had my 2000TL. My car is stock with mostly the factory accessories added. If I were you & are not doing so now with your car do as soon as you can.
Get a can of BG44K feul treatment & add to the gas tank at next fill up. This is what the dealer uses & you can buy it over the counter. It is not in the autostores only at the dealer or BG service shops. Use it every 7,500miles also switch to the MOBIL 1 synthetic motor oil along with BG MOA oil treatment. www.bgprod.com

It must be something wrong with your car. You said tire pressure is always good. How do your tires look? You might need to check alignment. Also, run diagnostic on engine/transmission/exhaust. I drive 50/50 city/highway in Chicago area with sometimes up to 90 mph (no kidding). I love pushing my car (using vtec way too often, should slow down). My gas mileage varies anywhere from 23 to 25 mpg. It’s not a rocket science. Your car burns gas that either spent moving it, or to a waist through heat (just burning inefficiently and not very clean), wheels resistance (alignment, pressure), etc. Check also you exhausted and CAT.

things i'd try.
Clean injectors --> STP formula thing.
Dont go on vtec area (4500 on theory, but the car gets 95% of its power at 3700s)
Fillup at a diff gas station... and if this works, never the station u usually filed up before.
If desperate check alignment.

Just so you know, gas stations throw water on the big well, i used to work at a car wash and this always happened quite often...theres a good reason though, i forgot it. *its not good for the car

P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C, used in a sentence.... your car getting low gas mileage and your inability to spell is pathetic, pathetic.....

Where the fuck to you guys live to get suck low gas mileage? Or how are you guys driving, very aggresive? Check the injectors, fuel filter, tire pressure... get that problem fixed in a hurry....

not true. mine spends ALOT of time in the vtec range and i get decent mileage. with a 40/60 C/H mileage i usually get over 300 to a tank and many times over 340. i have gotten over 460 to a tank also (averaged90+mph)

I dont drive aggresive though. Really. I threw STP fuel injector cleaner few weeks ago.. and it doesnt seem to help...

I think my tire pressure is ok since i went to the Dealer because of something related to Tires... and had them aligned...

What could possibly be wrong?

nothing is wrong. I did about 25% highway and the rest city, and my gas needle sits at about 1/4 tank with 370 km on Trip A. Honestly though, the TL is very good on gas, however you must drive the majority of that on the highway.

Last tank, I did about 280 km on the highway and 150km in the city. Now I was extremely aggressive on the highway, punching it a dozen times from 120 km/h to 160 km/h then I drove very hard in the city, and still achieved an average of 10L/100km...that's probably 23-24 MPG...still is very good seeing as I did a lot of hard city stop and go driving.

See the thing is that a lot of people think that driving like a grandmother (never punch it above 3k RPM's) will achieve better mileage. But I have found that on the TL this is not the case. I drove for about 2 months (believe it or not) like the above described elderly person ...and guess what, I would achieve the same, if not even less mileage than if I accelerate to 3500 RPM off every launch.

I'm telling you, I'm not a fast driver, but I do always push the car off the line (never in VTEC) and I get reasonable mileage, that you would consider decent on a 6 cylinder...

so all you anal people like me, stop babying your car so much, push the gas past 2500 RPM's...Honda engines are made to REV...so give them what they want...your heavy right foot!!!

sometimes I will even take her to 4k RPM off a launch. As long as you don't enter VTEC...everything is fine. Stop babying the engine so much, give it one kick before you transfer into a different style driver. Seeing as you have stayed below 2k RPM, you must not have felt the raw power of a Type S engine...give her one last gunn, and then drive your car like a spirited city driver...

take care.

I get about 350 miles per tank @15 gal during fill up even, 50/50 driving. Might want to check your tire pressure. I run about 35 psi all the way around. I check them once a month to compensate for the seasonal temperature fluctuation.

well i decided to go out and buy a K&N today when i reached an all new low of like 15.7 mpg. When i went to take the old air filter out it was GROSS!!! looked like it had never been changed. I put in the fresh K&N and i definately feel a little more power. In terms of gas mileage ill let you all know in the next week or so.

Hi, I got updated gas mileage of my car...
Ok... heres the result...
I did around 5% to 15% highway driving this time...
and now look! i filled up around 53.89 litres when i hit around 398 kilometres.

That makes hella difference though...

Usually, my driving condition is.. i start up my car and go somewhere really near by... so.. the engine cools down a bit... I start up the car again.. and come back home...

The engine drinks most gas during warming up driving..

That explains everything...!

well I have an 2003-tl mostly stock and since i picked the car from the dealer about a year ago i've tried every thing and the milage still sucks, the car is stock i tried driving below 2500 RPM for about a month with the AC turned off without major diffrence, i used to run on 91 Esso and now i am filling 94 Chevron again without any change.
I tried for few time the pedal to the metal and as i was excpecting it even sucked more gas. I went to my dealer and complained about the gas consumption but without any help from them. i've been told it's a big engine with a lot of horspower so it will consume .By the way the TL suck almost 18liter/ 100km ,I think that's 5 gallon / 60 miles if the math is right!!!!!!.

When i first started driving, I drove in SS mode all the time, often nearly maxing out 2nd gear before shifting since vtec feels and sounds so good. During that time, I avged about 17 mpg. With the rising gas prices though I resolved to stop, only occasionally "racing" [beat a Z last week]. Since then, prior to my accident, I had been averaging about 23-24 mpg. Higher rpms = more gas used.

Whoah! Dude! That's great fuel economy!! I have a '99 as well and I tend to get around 350 km or so..maybe even less actually.. and I never let the fuel go too low before filling up. I use PetroCan.... hmmm... so people have had better luck with Esso?

I used to have a '92 Volvo 960 and would fill up at around 450km and still have a 1/4 left (try not to let it go below that). That's the mileage I got even when the car had almost 300,000 kms. Guess it could also depend on how much larger the fuel tank was on the Volvo...
