gas cap going bad?
gas cap going bad?
The malfunction light went on and brought the car to the dealer. I was surprised when they told me that the reason why the light went on is that the gas cap is going bad. I know that the manual says something about tightening the cap but never did I imagine that the cap would wear out.
Has anyone experienced this light turning on? How can someone turn the light off without going to the dealer and paying them a diognostic charge just to reset the light?
I know that I got totally scewed by the dealer and I can't do anything about it.

So let me get this straight, if you have this problem with this light and is caused by the gas cap you have to take the car to the dealer to reset it? Now if you knew about this, why is it that you didn't tried to get the cap tight and see if this resets the light or is this not possible once the light comes on? I'm a little confused on this now. I do know that the book states that if the gas cap is loose you might get the light but I didn't know that you have to take the car to the dealer to get it reset.
More info on this please.

My 3.2 TL's malfunction light just went on too - gas cap was tight.
Seems like a crazy thing but the manual says to get it to the dealer because other emission problems (if it isn't the cap) could damage the engine....
Any way to get a code or more specific info fromthe car?
Thanks in advance
Steve

If you get your car inspected (in NY at least) and your gas cap is leaking, you won't pass. I had that happen to me once. If it doesn't pass inspections then I would think that the dealer should replace it if it's under warranty.

my mom had that problem, except she had a camry. she took it to the dealer only to find out she did not tighten the gas cap tight enough. Should be 3 or 4 clicks but not anymore since u might ruin the cap according to toyota. She was in and out in less than 10min ... no charge. Gas cap should be in same category as wipers ... just wear and tear and not covered under warranty.
Oh yea, my springs are coming in today!

You need to tighten the gas cap for atleast three clicks. This helps the seal, and Acura says that the light should go off in three days if the problem is fixed and the seal is tight.
If the problem persists, i would just buy a new gas cap from a auto motive parts store, Some stores you can't find the Acura, but I think the Honda one's fit. Wait three days and if the light doesn't go out then you may have f^@ked up the lip.
Make a call to the dealer.

my bro has this problem in his 99 accord. i asked him if he had filled up today/recently and he said yes, but he knew about the gas cap clicks so he was sure it was not that. the funny thing was that the dealer told him to just drive for several more days and that it would automatically reset?!?!? not sure if this is true but he went ahead with the reset and the code came back about the gas cap. also when he arrived at the dealership, the service agent checked the cap and it appeared not to be tightened. but yeah get a new gas cap, he did (oem).
