gas cap and emergency light

hey i have a 99 tl. i bought this car from a guy from ukraine in SC. i hope this isn't a p.o.s I have been to my repair shop twice for a check engine light and it keeps coming up as gas cap not on tight. So they fixed it and reset code and it happened again. This time he replaced the gas cap figuring it was that and didnt charge me the 40$ for diagnostic test. Well my light has come on for the 3rd time. Anybody know whats up? and the shop is the most honest, i know them well.
Also my emergency brake light has been coming on while i am driving and then randomly go off.
any suggestions would help because i would rather think i bought a bad car then for my loyalty to acura be changed cuz the car sucks (r.i.p vigor)

EVAP Leak detected was what mine said when I had a loose gas cap. I'm thinking that it might can be another problem with the same code?

if the code says evap leak detected then it should be the gas cap, maybe it is something else, I can't think of what though. You might want to try an Acura dealer to see if they can pinpoint the problem. BTW what is the mileage and how much did you pay for your TL?

good deal man. take her to the dealer to see what's really going on, then post their findings here so you can save some money.

A lot of times, the evap leak detection code is caused by an improper gas cap, or a loose gas cap.

However, it is also the same indicator of a leak in the actual evap system.

In essence, the evap system prevents gas vapor from escaping into the atmosphere. The system collects the gas vapor and holds it in a storage, and when the car is running a purge solenoid valve will route the vapor into the engine for combustion. Therefore, if the code said there's a leak, that means there's fuel vapor escaping into the atmosphere somewhere.

Can you smell fuel on your car? If you can, try to pin point the source. Something could be damaged along the hoses/lines of the evap system. In which case, you might also hear a vacuum noise (not like a vacuum you clean the carpet with, but as in vacuum lines.. it'll be like an air hissing sound).

What was the actual code, by the way? Just curious.

There are two evap purge valves on our cars. One in the engine bay, near the brake booster on the firewall; the other one is located by the rear driver side wheel. I would also suggest checking those... however, I'm not sure if there's a separate code dealing with the purge valves directly. If there is, then another code would be thrown for a failed purge valve(s). If not, then it's included under the same code of evap leak detected. Ask your shop about this, because I'm not sure. My point is that get them checked out, just to be sure.
