funny idle at stops

Have any of you ever had your idle go from like 800, then spring to 1200, then back down to 800, up and down and up and down?

sometimes when i'm at a light it does that. Been happening for awhile. Then when i turn the car off and back on, it will stop. This happen to anybody else? i changed my spark plugs and got all the maintenances on it, but forgot to tell the maintenance guy about it. Any ideas?

oh yah, you should change the plugs for 100k.

I bet you it is a loose vacumn hose, or you have a really tight throttle cable that need to be loosened a bit.

We had a '85 500SEL that had the same problem. Do you get a delay in acceleration after you punch it? If you do, it may be a throttle problem. If it feels like the engine "girgles" it is probably a hose problem. Oh, by the way, we had the throttle loosened on the Benz, but the problem was still there. Awe man, that was a great car... (other than that idling problem). Hope this helps,

I agree it could be a hose, it could also be a problem with the engine computer. Was the battery recently disconnected? If so that might be "normal" until the computer gets its brain together about how to idle the car.

If its not a hose you may want to disconnect the battery for a couple of hours and reconnect it so the computer is reset.

Make sure you have your unlock codes for your radio and NAVI if you have one.

Did the problem start after the car had sat for a few days??? If so, you have a corrosion problem on the IAC valve (idle air control) whcih is becoming quite common. The surge is caused by the ECU cutting the injector pulse to battle the sticking valve trying to idle the engine too fast, so the tach jumps up and down. If you go to neutral and it surges to 2000 RPM or so uncommanded then you can pretty much validate my diagnosis.

Hope this helps....Oh yeah, the only lasting repair is to replace the valve, cleaning has had only marginal success at best...especially over the long haul. This part mounts under the throttle body and is held on by 4-10mm bolts, coolant feed, and an electrical connector, I believe its a 3-wire set-up.

Have them check the ELD. Electronic Lowspeed Detection Circuit

I had it done to my TLS about 2000 miles ago due to rough and erratic idle.

The service manager placed a call to the Acura Tech Line per my request to check into an idle adjustment I'd heard from someone else. They came back and told me that Tech Line did have a recommendation for the idle problem I described. According to my service report and follow up the diabled the ELD so that the charging system operates all the time and not just on deceleration.

I've also had really smooth idle and acceleration.

I'd check with your service manager about this and see if they think this is what your TL needs.

oh yah, you should change the plugs for 100k.

The erratic idle is most likely, 9/10 times is an Idle Air Control Valve(IACV)..After durations of use, it tends to stick or bind causing erratic idle.

You will the get a P0505 DTC which will be "Idle Air Control Malfunction". The IACV will need to be replaced.

If you've had a transmission replaced or service on your car previously where the connectors on the throttle body had to be removed, i would check all of the connectors for a tight fit.. unplug them, plug them back in until you hear it snap into place. If hte problem still persists, replace the IACV and you should be set to go.

IACV replacement is for a repair technician's skill level. You should have no problems replacing it. Located underneath of the throttle body with 2 phillips screws holding it in. Throttle body will have to be removed to get to them.

good luck!

The IAC valve is your problem located directly under the throttle body
remove intake tube
remove throttle body and coolant hoses from it
turn throttle body over and loosen the 2 screws holding it on
replace in reverse order
$ 115. at dealer
you can also get it at a honda dealer the accord v6 has the same part number

1. buy a new Idle Air Control Valve
2. Remove the throttle body
3. see what part on the bottom of your throttle body matches up with your BRAND NEW IACV that you just bought.

you'll find it...
