funky gear change

Okay I have an 02 tl-s automatic w/85k on it. After the car is fully warmed and has been driven for 20-30 minutes. I notice under light accelleration that when 2nd gear engages there is a slight chatter. Its slight but noticeable(my wife noticed after I pointed it out).

Is this a sign of future transmission doom? Or something normal?

Chatter? You have to be more specific. Can you feel it? Can you only hear it?

Feels very similar to a stick car with hot spots or warped flywheel. Its a split second affair. Only felt. A sound impression would be "ch ch ch" as fast as you can say it. It feels like a jiggle. Initially you'd think it was an irregularity in the road. But after testing someplace smooth I find it very pronounced. Will see what the dealer says. If I get a deft answer I'll take it to a private shop. This is pretty irritating considering this a japanese luxury car.

It may be a slight slip of the tranny, sounds like you'll need a tranny replacement. Mine did something similar, a very slight intermittent thing over at least a few months. I too, thought at times that it was an irregularity in the road surface, but then one day it started slipping badly and slamming into gear every time I accelerated.

Yeah my car did the slight slipping, but it didn't make any noise.

Yeah I called an independant shop and he said it was clutch chatter probably caused by low line pressure. Its consistant it only does it in light accelleration. Acura dealer claimed no noticeable issues. Which again is irritating! Now I'm sitting on a $20k time bomb. I'm gonna look for a volvo to trade on.

and independant shops also like to tell you over the phone that things are broke and bring it down so they can fix it.

Does your problem happen every time you drive it or was it a isolated happened once thing. Dealers cant typically authorize the repair on something that isnt broke. The single Biggest sign that a tranny on our car is going to die is a slipping clutch type symptom between the 2-3 shift

I called a trusted friend of a friend transmission shop. I've been through bad transmissions before with different vehicles. Problem is deadly constent, car fully warmed, light throttle. I'm going to drive a different TL to see if there are any noticeable differences in the way mine shifts.

Trade that $20k time-bomb, as you call it, on a Volvo?

Jumping from the frying pan into the fire!

You need to have it taken in and checked out. I get customers calling me all the time saying this light is on, or my car is doing this or that...what's wrong with it? I can't diagnose a car over the phone as a service writer, nor can a tech for that matter. We've gotten ourselves into trouble doing "sevice aisle diagnosis" in the shop. (Myself or my boss listening to a problem, thinking we know what it is, order an expensive as hell part, finding out it's wrong---all just because we're busy and don't have time to make at tech stop what he's doing to look at something.)

My tranny took a shit again last night. The check engine light and srs light is on. I pulled the codes to see whats wrong and there it was tranny failure . Im getting tired of taking the car in for the tranny. I just got my tranny replaced about 4 months ago also. If my tranny dies on me again im selling my car.

Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Dealer

I agree with you guys. Everytime I tell my dealer about a sound or vibration, the dealer can never hear or duplicate the experience. I feel as if they are impersonating Sgt. Schultz in Hogan's Heroes. You can't or won't fix which you don't acknowledge. I wonder if this is in the Acura Service Manager's Handbook.

I believe you're the only one.

Mine had a 1-2 clutch shudder under light throttle from the last time they installed it (3rd tranny). I did a 3x change to amsoil and it's completely gone now.

Remember lovemytls, you're covered for another +/-15k miles so don't sweat it.

Yeah I'm covered for 15k more, but I drive my cars forever. I bought a car that I thought would be easy to live with for 6+ years. I drive em till they die or get smashed. I wanted something nice and quiet. I paid acura/honda price for KIA reliability. Come on! give me a break. Whats acura doing? GM builds dependable cars. I spent the last six years in one. Sounds to me like someone has rocks in there noggins. People with multiple replacements, thats simply unforgivable. Who is building these replacements and why to they suck? I will never buy an acura product again. In the mean time I'll enjoy my car.
