Front Motor mount? DIY?

dealer said that the rubber grommet on the front mount is cracked, and that he'll gladly charge me $400 to replace the mount. Is this a part that is DIY-able?

Yes, its a part you can change yourself in a hours time. There is no real DIY for it, but its basically a support engine with a jack (place block of wood between jack and motor), remove the bolts that hold it in place to the subframe, remove the center nut on the mount to motor bracket carefully lift the motor slightly as to get it out of the mount Unhook the vacuum line and replace (may be easier to remove the 3 bolts that hold the mount to the motor)

If your car is at the dealer for warranty transmission replacement
Its normal to find the front mount broken at that time- its a wear item

The service writer sometimes "forgets" that its a combo repair time
when trans already removed,-and that is 3/10 of an hour total
plus the part- part is ~$120 labor $30 not 3 hours labor!!!!
Call back and speak with the Service MANAGER
This happens often- they even tried it on me.
Mentioning acurazine goes a long way to prevent the bend-over many feel at the dealer

Just replace it yourself. I would loosen the bracket that the mount is connected to as I couldn't get mine out until I did that, even with my jack up all the way. It should take you about 1-1.5hrs. You can buy the part from www.acuraautomotiveparts.org for about $75.00.

Thats BS in as big a pile as they can feed you

Of course- while the car was in the dealers hands was the real time to get the invoice fixed, but you can still do it.
Go in person and speak directly with SERVICE MANAGER
The motor mount is 3/10 ths of an hour labor WITH trans removal
CALL ACURA CARE and make a complaint-
1-800-382-2238 x5 6a-5p pacific time
Not only did they screw you on the motor mount$- the key doesnt work, idles funny etc, all things you PAID for and expect to work correctly.
When you call Acura Care- almost immediatly an email- Blackberry-mail goes to many levels in the company and right to the Service Manager.
They dont like negative feedback , it effects their bonus $
They can easily credit you back if paid by credit card or company check if you paid by cash or check for the repairs.
You have to stand up for your rights, and ALWAYS mention ACURAZINE the worlds LARGEST online acura owners forum and what people here say they experienced.
I would be happy to provide your dealer a copy of my invoice showing the reduced labor time.
Good luck

Is motor mounts common on TL's

I haven't tackled this project yet, but I agree with the group, it doesn't look that complicated.

But is this common on TL's??? The dealership told me I need to replace both the front and the pass. side motor mounts. My vehicle is a 2000 TL with 50K and I live in San Diego where salt and freezing temps would not eat away at the rubber. So why are motor mounts going bad after 50K. They really aren't a wear item per se. Also, this is wife's care and it she does not have a lead foot to jerk the engine around.

Thanks for your feedback

I have an 2004 Acura TL, and most of the time i crank the engine, i could feel the engine vibrating. I always wonder what it is doing to the engine mounts at that time. Seems like the engine mounts are taking a beating every single time i start the car.

Yes this is common on the TL, and it is a wear part. They are vacuum assisted fluid filled mounts that do wear out fairly quickly on these cars.

That's total BS! I just got mine done for around $120 when I had my transmission replaced a couple months ago. Told me precisely that it would be "...$400 if we weren't already dropping the tranny"

I would report that guy, or at least don't go back there

change it yourself, you can buy the front mount for 75.00 at www.acuraautomotiveparts.org, the install will only take you about an hour to an hour and a half if you take it slow. easy DIY, passenger side is easy too and take about 15mins less time than the front.

My 03 TL has 25k miles. Took it to the dealer for scheduled maintenance and the service tech noted in the multi-point inspection that the front motor mount was broken and the side motor mount was cracked. The service adviser told me it was nothing to worry about and that it happens all the time on these cars. I had them replace them mounts three days later. Thankfully my car is still under warranty.

What's your take on filling them with polyurethane?

Up to a certain year/vin number 02s?? they were fluid filled
That odd dark fluid you find on the floor just before trans failure is likely.....

wait because i had a strange fluid that i thought was an oil leak coming from my rear mount area but it lasted like a week then it stopped. i know for a fact that a mount is gone because of the bad engine movement, im guessing the fluid came from my rear mount

i had a really difficult time getting my front mount out. i would recommend that when you loosen the bracket it's attached too you should crack the bolts with a long ratchet or whatever and then finish the removal of each one using a gear-wrench, or ratcheting wrench (whatever you prefer to call it). i found that when i use mine it was a bit easier than getting down there with a box-end or stubby ratchet.

are you going to fill yours with poly first? i did mine but i don't know if i can really quantify a difference. my mount was definitely busted when it came out though.

I'm just planning on putting the regular mount on, no poly fill.

Thanks for all the info guys, keep it coming!
