Friday Night ACCIDENT!

Friday Night ACCIDENT!
I was driving northbound on Main St in a neighboring town - there were 2 lanes, one to go straight and one for a left turn. I had to take a left turn ahead at the traffic light (about 500 ft away) so I was cruising down the left lane, slowly braking at about 25mph at most. The right line was backed up for a bit (red light ahead). There are a bunch of little shops on both sides of the street and a car was exiting one of the parking lots, he (volvo) wanted to drive south on Main St. so as the car in the right lane waved him out and let him cross in front of him to get into the southbound lanes, the volvo crossed both lanes, rather than inching forward and looking to see if cars were coming. Unfortunately by the time he saw me driving at him, it was too late. I hit him dead on - i drove straight into the side of his car - essentially "T-boning" him. I crushed the drivers side fender as well as the drivers side door. Both of his airbags off, but none of mine did. Fortunately, nobody was fatally injured, although the cops and the towing companies said both cars are totaled. By looking at the pictures I can't tell if any part of my frame has been damaged, but I have severe damage to the front of my car, mainly the left hand side.
It was his fault for "failure to yield the right of way" so hopefully his insurance company considers my car a total loss and just gives me the retail value of the car. If they fix it..it'll never be the same

Bummer that that had to happen. But it doesnt look that bad. Did what it was supposed to. At the speed you were going the impact probably wasnt near great enough to set the airbags off. And WHY do people assume that the car will never be the same??? If taken to a reputable repair facility it will be just fine and you should never know.

Thanks guys. My sister was sitting in the back w/o her seatbelt so she hit the pillar between the doors. She's in a neck brace right now, but hopefully she gets well soon.
As for the car "not being the same" I just meant that its not going to be the original anymore. I am sure it will look the same if not better, but it just won't be the same
As for the car being a total loss..who knows. I still havent seen the damage in the daylight and since it was the weekend, none of the insurance companies (mine or his) have taken a look. We'll see what happens this week.

Glad you're OK.
Now you know, but I'll say it anyhow - NOBODY RIDES IN THE CAR WITHOUT A SEATBELT! NOBODY! EVER!
Many years ago, I thougt I was being a nice guy. Similar situation and I was the guy who let the "Volvo" through. He did the same thing as your Volvo guy and got hit while I sat there and watched. Even many years later there's a sense of guilt, like it was my fault. I've never done it again. I let people into a lane, etc, but NOT to turn left across lanes.

As for being the person waving the other guy in, I see where you're coming from. Its not your fault though, its not your job to see if there are cars in the other lane. The "Volvo" should have inched forward and looked for himself.

Wow! I didn't realize there were that many people in the car. Glad no one was severely injured and hope your sister will be OK. Especially glad both front seaters had their belts on.
People don't realize that when the car is going 25 MPH, so are the people. When the car stops, virtually instantly, the people don't - they're still travelling at 25 MPH. I don't want to be thrown at anything - like a dash, a steering wheel or a pillar - at 25 MPH (let alone 45, 55 or 70 MPH) The seat belt is the only thing holding you back from a violent impact.

Where this scenario might not apply is if the Volvo had been sitting there for a long time and there were no breaks in traffic for them to pull out. But again they have to look where they are going when someone lets them in.

Insurance Company Totaled the car
So its official, the insurance company totaled my car. They were only offering $16.5K, but my insurance company offered me more, so I'm going to get the check from my company and then they will collect from the other insurance company.

Even though both cars were totaled the main point is that both of you were ok and nothing serious happened to either of you. Good luck with everything.

You gota be a deffensive driver and avoid all these dumb fucks out there.

im not sure if the engine got pushed back..i dont think it did, but there were parts of the frame that were bent and twisted so that could be why.

ive seen worst damage than that. you'll have to see if the engine was touched to determine if its worth fixing...
if the engine's gone, just go get another car and call it a day.
