phew..... i thought u wanted to "pimp your ride"...... i've fit a 32" tv in the back without taking the seat out and it just barely fit length and height wise. I think length is going to be your biggest factor.
This is of course assuming you are keeping it in the original box.

It wont fit 40" with the box. it fits perfectly with 32". If you have to use your car, without the box you can fit it in the back seat. The unable folded backseat is my worse disappointment. With all the horse power we are talking about, and it can't even ride a 40" lcd home.

For bulk transportation, they need the box to protect the tv. but you can take it out of the box and safely drive it home on the backseat. Just fold the box up and put it in the trunk if you need to save if for any reason. Have one guy from the store to help you loading the tv into the backseat. Our car is luxury sedan, but for me I have to utilize it for many things when my truck is not available.

You wont need the box if something happened to it. Take it out of the box and it will fit just fine

Man I went to black friday thinking I could fit a 65" DLP in my car. Man was I wrong. That box is monsterous! Anyways, while I was waiting for my buddy to get his van, this guy next to me was trying to fit a 40" in his newer Altima with no luck so I dont think it will fit in ours with the box. It's up to you if you wanna take it out. I personally wouldn't.

Read the fine print first- don't always believe what the employee who is helping you load it says- some places may charge you a fee if you return something without the packaging.

Well I tried to fit a MATTRESS in my car and it definitely didn't fit so I had to have it delivered by IKEA.
Some people just don't get it...
Op, I'd recommend taking out the whole rear seat and obviously depending on the size of the box it could fit. Atleast you'll know you tried your best with your car.
