Post First tank got 29 MPG!

I have been driving my new TL-S "agressively" to help break it in right and yet I got 28.88 MPG on the first tank. While I have been driving a lot of back roads (avoiding freeways) at modest speeds, I have also explored the VTEC range every day at least twice. I am very happy with this result.

I though that during the 'break in' period, you were actually supposed to take it easy on a new car. Have I been thinking wrong all this time??? If so, please let me know so that I don't have to suffer for the first 1000 miles!

Tag66 - you were thinking right - if you care for your car - take it very easy first 1,000 miles - and then KICK ASS.

If you break it fast it will be fast-if you break it in slow, it will be slow. Don't get me wrong-I do NOT flog the car. I vary the speed and take it easy most of the time but I do accel in short bursts into VTEC range. I do not approach redline and I don't drive over about 80 MPH. If you don't twist the rings, it could burn oil and be slow all its life. My MPG is proof things are working for me.

You're supposed to vary your rpms by a wide range, so your car doesn't get imprinted with your initial driving pattern. Just no WOT. Constant freeway driving is probably the worst thing you can do. Stop and go with brisk acceleration is best. From what I've always been told anyhow.

jhalderman is right - mixed driving gives the best break-in results. I find Hondas don't really open up until 20k miles or so.

29mpg - it must be the oil!!!!

I generally get about 22-24 in normal city (40%)/Highway(60%) driving....with all highway trips, it nets well about 30mpg (record was 36mpg), always with climate control on.

During an extended trip a while back (> 2500 miles) with 4 people + light luggage with climate control on the whole way at steady 70-80mph speeds, it netted 32mpg...hell that is Honda Civic mileage territory....

Did they change oil change frequency for TL 2002 or Type S? 3,500 miles or 7,000 miles, 7,500 miles?

The oil change frequency is the same. The specified oil is now SAE 5W-20 only.
