Finally!!!!!!! Break in Oil Fact or fiction from Acura themselves
Here yo go direct from their website after registering my info and car.
Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?
Your Acura engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.
American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions.
How about that; guess I was wrong

That's great, fine and dandy... but my car sat on the dealers lot for over 6 months before I bought it. I changed my oil at 1k with Castrol GTX 5w-30, and a new Honda oil filter. And for that, I feel much better. In most cases I'd say do what they say.... in mine, I don't think so!

Hyde: I still am not convinced. Special oil could just mean a high quality oil, and they just want people to leave in that oil rather than risk putting in some rot gut.

I believe the oil that our cars are delivered with is much thicker than the oil we replace it with at our first service...it is this added thickness that helps to catch the little metal particles left in the motor but not cuasing scoring or anything on the cylinder walls etc...

What you learn in Auto Engine 101 is that all new engines come with break-in oil (non detergent) to help in the break-in process..A properly broken-in car will have better performance and gas milage....
Honda's biggest strength over just about any car maker..???....Engine design and manufacture.....They know how to build a engine! And they know when you need to change the oil.
You can complain about the brake rotors, tranny or the Bose System....BUT THE ENGINE.......Just look at it idle....That says it all!!!

I think all the 1K and before changers are all just forced by old habit. I was about to do it too. However, its not better safe then sorry in this case. Acura also told me the oil had additives for brake in, and I talked to a friend of a friend that works for Acura.
I had it changed at 3100 milees, I bit sooner but close. Now think about it, dealers want money right? They would like to charge you for everything, and anything, right? Sense when to they warn against selling you something? Think about it!
You know who else doesn't recommend to chance oil early on their new cars? Porshe. On their cars, your doing nothing worthwhile changing it sooner. So if its wrong to think its ok to leave it over 1K, I guess their engineers are not bright, and haven't invente at least one component on every modern high perfromance car?
Anyhow, I agree with Hyde and just wanted to get some points out. The biggest thing that made me think was, why would the dealer not be like, "right now? Ok, great, $28 plus tax please."

More freeways, less traffic!

Just some "food" for thought -- keep flames below 10,000 degrees (please).
The car gets broken in by a "pro" for 1000 miles (use your own definition).
(Now enter driver #2 -- the regular driver)
You only drive the car 2000 miles in a year and a half. The car is only driven back and forth to a market 1 mile away. The car rarely gets a chance to heat up and burn off condensation.
1. Do you wait 3 years to get the oil changed at 4000 miles?
2. Do you go by the time intervals?
3. Do you toss a coin into the air?
4. Or change the oil every 6-months.
I'll take option 4 (just my opinion) and this is an extreme example. What do you folks think?

1) RE: thicker oil holds particles - utter nonsense - this is done by the additive package and they are removed by the filter.
2) RE: non-detergent oil. I have not seen ND oil for 15 years, and not seen it used in break-in since my 1968 Triumph TR250. Send a email to Acura and see if they recommend a ND oil for 1 mile, let alone 3750-7500.

I'd use regular oil at that early stage, give your motor some time to break-in. Use sythetic later.
I still think "break in oil" is B.S........ I changed my oil at 3000miles and I'm glad I did. That oil wasn't all that nice. Not bad mind you, just feel alot better that I changed it. And to think some people change their oil at 7500 miles Makes me cringe.

FWIW, prior to changing oil at 3K miles (put in Mobil 1 5W30), I was getting between 20 and 21 mpg around town. Used less than half a tank since the oil change. Filled 'er up today with a little over seven gallons (US); averaged 19.3 mpg.

All right - just checked mileage again today. All city driving - no highway. Went 270.3 miles and squeezed in 12.309 gallons. According to my $3 calculator, that gives me 21.959 mpg (prior to the Mobil 1, I was getting as much as 20.75 mpg). If I go 7500 miles between oil changes rather than 3000 miles, even at almost double the cost for an oil change for the synthetic, and assuming the price of high test stays at about $1.30 a gallon, I should come out ahead by about $25.00 or more.
Any Einsteins want to check behind me?
